 JD 48 or 448?

I am interested in a backhoe for my 4500. Dealer says they have new model, 448, which is replacing 48. Anyone know anything about them? Also I'm not sure about the ability of this hoe. I now have a worn out Emco (Ford 4500 4x4 converted by Emco company) backhoe, has 24's all around with a 15' reach on the hoe. Great machine but can't get in small places and leaves marks. Just worried if the 48/448 will do most jobs I now use the Emco for. Any comments would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

 JD 48 or 448?

I've saw pictures of the new Deere hoe, but don't know any of the specs. I've had a 48 for years and it's been a great little machine. One of my neighbors was trenching around the foundation of his house this summer for a drain tile to help keep the basement dry. I don't recall what kind of hoe his is, but it's bigger than my 48, anyhow his was too clumbsy to get in the tight corners and the 48 did the job for him. Probably their first limitation is that when digging real deep your reach isn't quite long enough to keep the spoil pile far enough away from the trench as it grows bigger. In that case I usually just pull out and use the FEL to move some of the spoil pile out of the way then go back to digging. Best of luck. Frank.

Thanks for the info Hardwood...sounds like you are happy with your 48. We have very stoney soil, just nasty ground, and wondering the power to break loose stones, stumps, etc. From pictures looks like you have lots of toys! Just a little envy!

Hardwood's right. About the only thing you'll miss is the reach. I've rolled rocks out of a hole that my FEL could just barely lift.

1stjds; Thanks for the compliment on all my toys, but in the real world they for the most part are part of the equipment for farm and field maintinence. the 48 hoe never comes off the 4310, it just seems like we use it almost daily for some small thing that if it weren't allready on a tractor you would'nt take time to mount it. We never seem to run out of field stones to dig out that we hit during spring and fall tillage, the 48 has dug out hundreds of them. Probably the most handy machine you have saw in my pictures is that old Clark forklift. I bought it quite a few years ago in an "As Is" condition, pump was shot, the ram leaked bad, etc. I'd be totaly lost without it now, for example we had a tire go flat on the rear axle of our 9610 Deere combine yesterday morning in the field. That old green hunk of cast iron lifted the rear of the combine, we blocked it up for safety and changed the tire right in the field. Back to the 48, stumps are a far greater challenge than rocks, rocks come out once they move, but stumps can have lots of roots going all over the place that can give you fits at times. Have a great week. Frank.
