3 pt backhoe for old Kubota tractor ?

I have an old Kubota 245 DT that came with a house I purchased in the Caatskills of NY state. I am from Long Island and have no experience with tractors but the kubota has been invalueable to me in home improvement projects and gardening, it came with a box blade and scarifiers and a york rake and plow blade and front loader. The front loader mounts broke when the previous owner tried lifting a car with it. He welded it back on but some of the struts have since cracked ( he welded to the motor or tranny housing , which I think is cast, not a good thing). I need to re attach the front loader properly , it works fine but tends to wobble with heavy loads. I need to do some digging and the catskills is about half rock from what I can tell and hand digging sucks !!! I was thinking of a backhoe attachment for this tractor, its 4 wd and runs beautifully with only about 700 original hours. It seems to be about a 1978 or so in year. can anyone help me with what I should be looking for and how to attach it to the tractor, or should I just sell the tractor and buy a backhoe ?
thanks
paul

Paul, I am not familiar with that model. Any idea of the horsepower and tractor weight?

The only tractor I would try to hang a 3pt backhoe off of would have to be pretty big, like 3000 pounds+, and then it would be a very small hoe.
It is also possible that someone makes a sub-frame/hoe package for that model. But the alterations you describe could prevent mounting a sub-frame.

Getting a professional appraisal of that old welding job would be my first order of business, just to make sure you are not throwing good money after bad.

I believe the tractor is over 3000 lbs, the Hp is 28 if Im not mistaking.
Do you happen to know if I can mount a plate buy bolting it into the threaded holes in the motor housing or tranny housing ? The holes are not being used and are covered with plastic plugs from the factory. I figure to bolt a plate and then weld to the plate so as to avoid welding to the cast metal of the housing.
I need a backhoe for digging in culvert pipe on my road and for planting some trees.
thanks

As Mark stated a good welder needs to look at the tractor. Welding cast iron is tricky and a generally will not hold unless it is stress relieved with heat treating. I am not sure where you will find such a person in the Catskills. I would look for a welder that works on heavy equipment.
You may be farther ahead to consider it a trade in on a new tractor with BH attachment with frame mount.

Im actually a welder, I know I can easily make the necessary repairs if I can bolt into the holes I mentioned. The FEL already works well the way it is, its just not as stable as Id like. It was welded very well to the undercarriage but the struts that run up are the ones that are cracked. That was the result of welding to the cast. Id never have done that. I probably should have considered an offer I had for the tractor, but I know that this one has been at the house from the day it was purchased and stored in a heated garage , I was offered $7000 with the attachments. That wouldnt be much of a downpayment on a new one right ? I think they are pretty expensive new. I may opt for a well used backhoe like a Deere or a case that is in operable but well used condition.
thanks for all the help, this is a great board.

If you only need the hoe I might look into one of the small trackhoes. They are available out of Japan for around 10K.
Units tractor/FEL/Backhoe are available for as little as 15K for the BX22 Kubota. The least expensive unit of your size range is probably a Kioti DK35 or 3054. Packages on these are as low as 19K.

Tractors are really designed for draft rather than loads placed on them a backhoe. A hoe has huge leverage (sub-frame or not) and tries to jack-knife a tractor's cases. That isn't main design goal of a tractor and use of any hoe on any tractor is somewhat outside the designed use.

Of course, tractor hoes do work OK within limits and I've used my little 3ph hoe for almost five years. My use is 'considered' and I don't hesitate to call in a contractor with a proper hoe for heavy work. I'm not sure that work where digging sizable rocks with a hoe is a great idea for a tractor unless the tractor is very over-sized for the work. I'd say this is especially true for a tractor that has a loader for which it probably also wasn't designed for. Loaders also are somewhat outside the designed uses for a tractor, but newer designs are better for loaders as well as hoes. One way of looking at it is that if the tractor has small resale value, maybe just doing it and accepting the risk that the tractor may break and have to be parted out may isn't a bad solution.

For digging rocks, a sub-frame mount seems almost an essential and a sub-frame probably would have to be fabricated. 3ph hoes tend to break a tractor at the case joints by placing huge compression on the top-link mount. I've also seen a picture of a chunk of the case around a top-link bracket broken out. Sub-frame mounts attempt to distribute the load over more of the tractor's chaises. If the tractor is a traditional design without a frame, it sounds like you appreciate the problems of mixing mild and cast loaded members.
