JD 48 backhoe and three point arms

I need some help. I rented a 3 pt tiller for my JD 4600. I have a 48 backhoe. I just went out and removed the hoe only to find out that the mouting plates seem to be well in the way of getting the lower end of the 3pt arms onto their pins. Does anyone have any suggestions?? I don't think I should have to remove the plates to use a 3pt attachment (or should I?).

Dan,

I change from the 48BH to the 3PT hitch often on my 4700. The plates do not have to be removed. The bottom links must be installed first. The link must be at an angle which allows the spherical bearing to slip on to the pin. Be patient, once you find the correct angle, the links go on fairly easy. Also, the hitch pins are a challenge. Not much room for the ring. I hope this helps.
Tony

Dan. Be patient with your self and your machine. I just had the very same experience. I have a JD4600 with the 48 Backhoe. Took the backhoe off to put my scraper box on to do a little leveling and ended up scratching my head. You need to play with the angle a little bit, I used some WD40 on the ends so that the balls in the arms rotate very easily. After I did it once I had to do it again because its such a tight fit. I guess you could say they really enginered it.
Jay

Thanks guys, I was in sort of a time crunch because I wanted to get my garden in and this was my last chance for a while. After I posted I went back out and crawled underneath and figured there must be a way. After some manipulation I managed to get them on. Your right they really did engineer this one close. It didn't seem possible they would go on, but they did. Thanks again.
