 Backhoe narrow bucket width

I have an 18" width bucket for my Cadplans built backhoe. I want to build a narrow bucket to be used primarily for trenching and possibly to help with the digging up of stumps. I was considering building a bucket of 8" width. A supplier has 6" and 12" width bucket kits for my hoe ready to ship, and can supply my custom width at a slightly higher price (about $30 more). Any feedback on this from users of narrow buckets would be appreciated.

Ken, I was quoted $190 plus $30 for shipping on a 8" bucket custom made to fit
my JD48. I haven't ordered it yet. Did you get a better price from your supplier? The manufacturer's website is www.lackender-fab.com

I have used my 755 w/ #7 backhoe w/ 13" bucket for digging out a fairly significant tree stump (oak, 20+" at the butt). I found the 13" bucket to be a very good compromise between removing bulk dirt (and there was a lot of it) and getting around the roots. A smaller bucket may have given me a little more maneuverability at the cost of making the bulk digging more tedious. Having done this job, I don't think I would opt for a smaller bucket if I had the choice.

I have a #7 JD hoe on my 755 tractor and use a 9" bucket. I too use it
to dig out oak stumps and it seems to work very well(with patience!). I have considered getting a SMALLER bucket to trench with, but have never followed up. One big plus I've found with my small bucket is in using it close to my house around pipes, etc.,you can be almost surgical in your digging. For my use, smaller is more useful than larger (backhoes only!). Also, I don't know if my machine would move a larger bucket through the hard, rocky ground my property
becomes in the summer.

The prices quoted to me by Metkit in Va. was $120 for the 6" width, $128 for the 12" width, both in stock ready to ship, and $150 for a custom cut width of 8", shipped in 5 days. The shipping charge to me is about $40. Keep in mind these are kits, and the buyer (or someone else) has to weld it together. All parts are pre-cut and drilled where needed.

Ken, could you give us the e-mail address and phone number of Metkit?
Do you know if they make buckets for other backhoes?

Thanks,
george

Ken, those are excellent prices. I priced buckets last Fall when I ripped mine and for awhile I couldn't see how to fix it. It is a medium duty 12" for a little 7 foot depth 3pt backhoe. All of the buckets that I found ran between $350 to $600 depending on who made it. One company who made a lot of buckets for Kubota and JD had one at around $350....so I went and looked at it. Way too light duty for my little hoe - half the strength of the one that I ripped - and I think that most hoes are stronger than mine.
I finally figured out that I could use the backhoe hydraulics and some chain to straighten out my bucket and while it was being held that way I torched the bent areas out and re-welded it. Better than new!
BTW, the best way I've found to rip a bucket is to hook a big rock and keep pulling on it with one tooth.

George, Metkits web site is Metkit.com, their email is metkitcorp@aol.com and their phone number is 540-387-4995. I am not sure if they have other buckets available or not, as I stated in another post, these prices are for material kits, they have to be welded by the buyer. They may build custom buckets, give them a call.
