This may have been discussed in the past, but does anyone have experience with backhoes, both 3 pt hitch and/or self propelled models, constructed from CadPlans drawings. What about complete kits from Metco Supply (these are per CadPlan prints)?

I have built the model 808 3pt. version of backhoe for my John Deere 1070 tractor. I have dug about 10 large pine stumps up with it so far and cleaned out my creek for irragation. It has worked great.

Did you just buy the plans or did you get a kit from Metco Supply? How long to build? Does it seem to put a lot of pressure on the 3pt hitch? I'm asking because I have seen the castings on other tractors crack - but not due to a back hoe attachment. The pictures on their web site look good and the price is certainly right - compared to units at the Kubota dealer. These units also look similar to the units available from Northern Equipment (N. Hydraulics). Any advice and hints would be appreciated. Thanks.

Richard, I bought the plans from Cadplans and got the material kit from Metco. I have the 2 joystick control on my unit and deleted the seat that came with the kit and bought a seat that was better. It took more than the estimated 50 hours that they advertised, more like 100 hrs. There are 5 sizes and the smaller units are closer to the one Northern sells. Good rule of thumb is that the tractor should weigh about 3 times the weight of the B.H. My tractor weighs more than 3000 lbs. and the lift should be able to lift the unit. The way the stabilizers are made, it takes alot of the pressure off the tractor when you dig. I did bend the adjustable down link on the right side lift arm, so I had to build a stronger lift link, which I did using a center link. I am using the hydraulics from the tractor and this is working well. There are a few modifications that add strength to the unit. I sent both Cadplans and Metco some information that would improve things, but I don't know if they change or not. You can email direct if you would like at crkside@accucomm.net hope this helps.
