 General Backhoe Q's for Noob

HI
My company has me looking for a used tractor, we need to buy either a 5000 series Deere or a similar style Kubota.

We will then need to get a used backhoe. I've been told that some brands of backhoes are interchangeable with different tractors, also that Woods or Koyko has backhoes to fit different models.

I'm very new to this, and hope someone can give me some pointers on how to go about searching for these things, what and how.

Thanks

also, what's SCV stand for on tractor specs?

Unlike cars, all rear tractor attachments pop on and off all tractors with ease (within broad general size categories). But don't be misled: the exceptions are the front loader and the rear hoe. These have to be sized perfectly, and attached properly, both mechanically and hydraulically.

My advice is to look for a tractor with both already on. (Loaders are useful, and they balance a hoe.) Just let tractor dealers in your area know what you're in the market for.

SCV = Selective Control Valve.

This is what provides and controls hydraulic power for the backhoe. Not all tractors have remote hydraulics. If they do, you can see the quick-connect couplers at the rear of the tractor.

There are those here who will warn you about using a backhoe attachment that is only mounted to the 3 point hitch of the tractor. Think you will find the vast majority will tell you to only use with a mounting system designed for your tractor. Depending on how much you will be needing and how big a system you may find you wish to have two machines.

If you can share detailed information on what you expect to be using the machine for, not just digging holes or moving dirt and is time an issue and so forth.

Very general but you can dig about anything and move about any thing with any size machine unless it is a fixed load or it will not reach far enough. So if you will be digging and moving rocks you need a machine that can lift the biggest rock. (Or in my case stumps.)

Unless you really will be in the business you might be surprised how much work you can get done and find you don't have a long term need for a tractor loader bachoe (TLB) and are well served to buy used, do the work and sell it. There are real experts here on the TLBs and guess they have missed your question or could be just waiting on more details from you. kt

I have a Deere #48 hoe for my 4310 Deere tractor. It uses a subframe mount system that I think is quite similar to Kubota's subframe mount system. These are very reliable simple mounting systems that will have the hoe on or of in ten minutes or less after you have did it a couple times. I have never owned a three point mount hoe, but from the experiences of some friends and neighbors who have broken three point top links, bent the lower arms, etc. I knew there had to be a better way to mount a backhoe. It is always best to match the backhoe brand to the tractor brand, the mounting points on the tractor are correct, the hydraulic pressures and flow rates are correct for the hoe, etc. I've mounted and dismouinted mine lots and lots, and think nothing of putting the hoe on for a ten minute job. Have a great day. Frank.

I think you would be happy with a 5000 series and a JD 48 backhoe. I have this combo and mine digs better than I expected it to. Hardwood is dead on above- The first few times I took it off it took about 30 minutes to an hour getting it back on. Now it's about ten minutes depending on what I have to take off. Biggest pain is switching seats- but youre going to get that with any combo.

wow lots of good, quick replies.
thanks everyone for the good information.

i'm well set to move a bit forward on this.

i'm sure I'll have more questions.

all we'll be using the backhoe for, as far as i know yet, is to dig holes for posts. the ground here is more rocks than dirt. it didn't make sense to even try to start this project with just an augur.

thanks again
