Got to go pretty soon, so maybe more later. There have been discussions before about Shibaura Ford crossovers. You'd think I'd remember since I have 1710 but I don't know what Shibaura model if any used a similar engine to the 1710. I do know that the Ford and Shibaura engines aren't identical. It'd take somebody with a lot of experience to know if a complete Shibaura engine would be a bolt on exchange or how much modification would be required.

There was mention here awhile back that Mahindra acquired some rights to the old Ford compacts and might be a source of parts. I think that if an entire new engine is needed it's going to cost more than the tractor whether it's from NH, Shibaura or elsewhere. Maybe a parted out 1710 could be found.

thanks tom, I really only need a head, but everyone said that it would probable use oil if I put a new head on it with-out overhaul. Overhaul at local rebuilder would cost
1200.00 Including new pistons and rings, plus the head costing $1345.00 from local dealer.total cost to rebuild about $2600.00. That is too much for 1987 model for me to invest for home garding....I will keep searching for a used head. and install it myself...Head was pitted out so much that it did not have enough compression to start, had to pull it off every time....Going to grind out the head to remove all rust and pits and have a welder to fill back up the holes and take it to a machine shop and have the head shaved....
will advise later if it worked...

Try Eagle Tractor Parts in Eagle Lake, TX. I don't have much info on them but I seem to recall they have a website and I know they are listed in the phone book. They are not far from my ranch and have tons of old tractors and equipment .

I get the pic and the oil thing likely is right depending on how many hours are on the engine. I guess the pitting is on the valve seats and specialty welding shops can do amazing things.

One thought I had is if the pitting (rusting?) came from coolant leaks the rings may be affected too. If it has fairly low hours the cylinders may be OK but honing and new rings may be advisable--more tear-down though. I wonder if a leak-down compression test might be useful. It might show for certain where the compression loss is happening. At least I've heard of things like listening for air loss into the manifolds with stethoscopes and putting heavy oil on top of the pistons to see if the leak-down slows. If it's all in the head and the hours aren't too high then maybe repairing the head might do the trick without turning it into an oil burner. I would check the valve guide clearances because that can be a source of oil burning and compression loss as well.

Good luck with this and I imagine you have the NH repair manual.

I don't think you'll find a complete engine for less than an overhaul. As for finding a Shibaura head , they are like finding hens teeth. If you can fix what you have , I'd recommend it. If it isn't repairable , I'd consider taking it in trade or buying it outright for a parts tractor.
