 Shibaura 26F 4x4 problem

So I bought a used 26F runs fine but had a deep clicking knocking noise in 4 wheel drive. obviously related to something cyclic, like a gear because of timing.
No manuals available in English and I'm told the NH does have the same engine but the transmission / 4x4 is different.
Yesterday not under load I hadn't switched the 4x4 off driving in tilled soil, so the click goes way loud then stops and the 4x4 no longer engages lever is clearly not connected inside, moves up and down easily.

Before I try to find anyplace to even look at this I'd like to trouble shoot it a bit and get some idea of what to expect for the repair. I can rebuild an engine but don't know transmissions at all.

Any and all information appreciated. Like everyone else would love to have a repair manual, no idea who makes the transmission either.

Thanks

To localize the noise, get something slippery under the tires (ice, grease, mud, pea-stone) and chain the back to something solid. With at least one front and one rear wheel turning, use a mechanics stethoscope to pinpoint the sound. Or jack up one or both sides so the raised wheels turn, but taking the weight off them might make a difference. Or drive while someone walks alongside touching an extra-long probe on the scope to the moving parts (potentially dangerous).

Once it made the big noises and stopped engaging there isn't any noise to listen for now. I did sort of that process though and it is clear the front is Not engaging neither front wheel turns jacked up or not. And the lever to engage the front moves up and down easily so what ever it attaches to internally is not attached. Fairly sure the noise was in the front to begin with, but wouldn't stake my life on it Smile

All I know about "Shibaura" is that it's a suburb of Tokyo but I'd check at the control end (such as a snapped pin in the engage mechanism) because that's easier to find and fix. Then you'll have to troubleshoot the front end. Or just figure you have a 2WD unit.

Thanks, that's about what i've gotten to as well, Did verify that it is closest to a Ford 1920 similar to a 1720, which are actually both made by shibaura. So I'm going into the box or will drop the housing if I must word is they don't generally have problems that are other than minor so we shall see.

Hope you two found much less costly problem then I did with a nice clicking sound in my Kubota transmission in a certain gear, it was only a broken tooth on a gear. The great really was not that costly...but taking the tractor apart to find which gear and then to remoe it was rather costly.

 Shibaura 26F 4x4 problem

There seem to be 2 common problems. In my case it was the gear the 4x4 shift lever interfaces with the teeth striped.

The other is the lever has a little part that interfaces with the that gear that can slip out or break off.

If you take off the sheet metal around the seat area it is easier to work on. There is a plate on top of the transmission with a lot of bolts on top. It is the bump in the center of the floor furthest to the rear. If you take of that plate you can look into the box and see which is damaged. Be sure and clean everything well BEFORE opening, you don't want any dirt or grit in the transmission!!
This will at least let you see the problem. Sadly if it is a gear it is necessary to "split' the tractor to get it out. If a competent mechanic were to replace the gear it should be 6-8 hours if they had to start from scratch. The closest New Holland dealer tried to tell me it would take days, so be careful! If you aren't aware this is basically the same transmission as a NH 1920 or 1720. http://www.messicks.com/nhparts/NH/434.aspx

Good luck!

 Shibaura 26F 4x4 problem

I can supply a parts book, which gives a breakdown of all the components. I use parts books more than the repair manuals when working on tractors. I can supply parts & also have capability to cut new gears.

 Shibaura 26F 4x4 problem

I am just watching and trying to learn as people have issues. I have a NH T2210 4x4 HST with FEL. Having read these posts, is there a proper way to use the 4WD mode? I have a concrete/asphalt drive about 300ft. Going from the garage to the fields or through the barn carrying manure, should I be shifting in and out of 4wd on the hard top and back to 4wd when I go into a field or up the dirt road to the manure pile? What about using the FEL moving gravel and sand (I moved over 16 yards of gravel and sand to put in a bad weather pen around our barn) should I not use 4wd on the asphalt with a loaded FEL? Or as the original poster stated, that he has a "lemon" and most operators do not have problems?

Thanks! Only 80 hours on the machine and I want to be sure I am not abusing it unintentionally!

AC
