Tractor has set for several weeks. I get white smoke only. starting fluid doesn't help. thoughts? I just read one posting discussing a solenoid and or fuel injectors. Where does one get parts?

Is the battery strong enough to spin it fast enough?

For parts, google "shibaura + tractor" but that's premature. White smoke could indicate valves out of adjustment, low compression, etc., but it's more likely quite normal.

I gather you're new to diesel tractors, so suggest losing the starting fluid.

If it was running when you shut it down, you don't likely need parts. Could rain (or birds) have gotten into the exhaust while it sat idle? Have you checked to see if mice decided to nest in the air filter? Have you looked in the sediment bowl for signs of wet fuel ? What happens when you use starting fluid?

Thanks for the response. I have lost the ether, but my neighbor suggested WD 40. The battery is good, glow plugs ok and the injectors seem ok too.
Thanks again

I will check what you suggested. A little more history. It did this before also, so I had my neighbor, a good mechanic with gas engines look at it. He said he checked the glow plugs and injectors. Then just did a lot of cranking to get good fuel flow and it ran good. Then started every day for a week or so. Now same problem after setting. We used WD40 for starting fluid. first it turned without results, then was firing on 1. after a bit fired on two breifly. then we stopped. I will remove the filter bowl and check the exhaust but doubt it is a problem.
Thoughts? thanks.

Sometimes after sitting for a few weeks a leak however small can allow air to get in and allow fuel to drain leaving only air . If it were me I would disconnect the injectors and pull them back JUST A TINY BIT and crank . If you have air in the system it will compress without doing this . This allows the air to leave the system . Crank until you see fuel coming out of the tubes and then re-tighten the injector lines and start .

Yeah that's fuel starvation. Air is getting into your hard lines somewhere/somehow. Starting fluid by the way - in the hands of an inexperienced operator - can cause serious damage to a diesel engine by inadvertently detonating on the wrong stroke.

If it was a leaking injector, only the associated hard line would airlock. The tractor should still start on the remaining cylinder(s). And odds of all injectors leaking at the same time are pretty slim. Same with all hardlines leaking externally at the same time. Plus - when injectors drip - you end up with diesel fuel in the engine oil. If your engine oil level hasn't mysteriously increased and there's no external sign of leakage between the pump and the injectors, I'm thinking something's gone wrong with the injection pump - something's that's causing fuel to gravity-drain backwards into the pump. That then causes airlock in the hardlines.

Bleeding the air out does not actually require removing the injectors themselves, just use a line wrench to loosen the hex collars that attach the hard lines to each injector. Crank the engine and watch the bubbles come out. When the bubbles turn to an even fuel flow, tighten the hex collars back down. The engine should now start.

But this problem will only get worse. I'd see about getting the pump rebuilt or replaced before you end up bleeding the lines before every start.
