 Rent, Buy, or Contract?

I am new to tractoring. I recently bought a considerable plot of land and I am ready to buy a tractor, but after reading some of the feedback in this forum I am concerned. The new property is East Coast and I currently live on the West Coast and will not be moving there for another 3 years. This means that the tractor will sit for long periods (6 to 9 months) without being used.

Since I was planing on spending 2 months there this summer and the proerty contains 10 acres of overgrown valley land that is crying to be bush hogged, I thought it would be a good time to buy a tractor and give it a go. The property includes a small house and a garage where I can shelter the tractor, but I am concerned about letting it sit idle for so long.

Would I be better off trying to rent a tractor or maybe just contract out to have the work done? Once I move to the property I will definately buy a tractor.

If I do buy a tractor, how often should it be run to keep it in good condition?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Field mowing goes from $10 to $50 an acre depending on the volume and the area your property is in. When you mowing an affluent Estates' field areas it'll be toward the higher end. In a farm area the lower.

A new compact tractor is going to cost you between $12000 and $20000 depending on what your wants are. The warranty period in your case will largely go untested, probably not a good thing. Assuming a 5% interest rate and a cost of $16000 on the interest lost alone you would be able to hire out the annual mowing and be ahead of the game.

Letting a diesel powered piece of equipment sit for 6 - 9 months is not a good idea. I see more problems from sitting and non use than almost any other cause. I think Dennis is right until you move on the property, hire out the work you will be way ahead of the game moneywise.

CONTRACT is the only way to go. If you let your machine sit for most of the time your warranty isgoing to expire before you know how to operate the machine. Get bids and be specific on what will bemowed and what will not in writing. Good luck
