An overrunning clutch prevents an implement (such as a bushog), driven by a power source (your pto), from transferring any kinetic energy back into the pto. In other words, the tractor pto can drive the shaft to the bushog, but when you disengage the pto the overrunning clutch sort of "ratchets" to prevent the bushog (while blades are still turning) from trying to drive the pto. That was a dangerous design flaw in early tractors, such as some of the "N's" made by Ford. Early tractor transmission/pto designs had the pto shaft and rear end connected live. That meant the bushog could actually drive the tractor forward just by kinetic energy in the bushog, even after you depressed the clutch pedal! Most tractors now have a clutch designed into the pto.

The grey market tractors almost without exception dont have live pto.So they need a overunning clutch. Some of the smaller tractors don't either.I am almosr sure the L2500 kubota doesnt have live pto.I have a Yanmar 2500 grey and I am gonna look for one (overunning clutch) and until I do have one I wont use the pto for ANYTHING.Tractor Supply has them. But they have 50 badrillion different kinds, and I'm not sure which one to get!!!Keith
