 Grey market tractors

There are shades of meaning to the term. Practically speaking, a gray market tractor is one where dealer service and parts are not readily available in a country.

I think the term specifically refers to a tractor that is imported independent of a company that does market tractors in a country and does maintain a dealer network. There are smaller organizations that import 'name-brand' tractors from lower cost areas and resell them. The tractors may be identical to current production models of well-known tractors. These organizations don't have the cost overhead of maintaining service and parts facilities and can offer lower prices. It's understandable that the 'name-brand' companies aren't happy with the practice and usually won't perform warranty work.

I have heard stories of extreme positions taken where dealers are forbidden from doing any work on a gray. I suppose the issue would be good to know about for people who are looking at used tractors. A dealer could identify a gray from the serial number. I think some manufacture web sites have serial number information where country of original sale can be identified. I imagine that most dealers would ignore the issue, especially if it wasn't pointed out to them, unless it was a warranty claim or factory upgrade in which case they wouldn't have a choice. Tractors aren't the only things that have gray markets.

 Grey market tractors

It can also mean any tractor imported into North America that is used. Used tractors are not subject to tariffs.

Usually the tractors in question are missing one or more things we associate with new tractors these days, such as ROPS (Roll bars), PTO Shields, three point hitches, matching/easily attached loaders, mid pto's, power steering
seatbelts and modern hydraulic systems.
