 Elapsed Time Meter

How many hours are too many when buying a used tractor? I realize this is an open ended question but how about some guidelines. Assuming that a seller had no maintenance records to prove any claims, what number of hours would be too risky. Assume also that a thorough inspection of oil, coolant and running operation turned up no suspicious clues. As an example, 100K miles on a car that is well maintained may not be excessive but on one with no history would be very questionable. I'm searching for some pearls of wisdom from all you experts out there.

The hour meter is of questionable value in evaluating a used tractor with unknown history. You need to be able to assess the overall condition of the unit, and determine if it matches the hours shown. This will give you an indication of the care the machine has (or hasn't) received, and whether or not the hour meter has been changed out of necessity or altered out of deception. If you aren't comfortable making this judgement, pay someone to help you. Finding a used tractor includes learning where parts and service are available, and the relative cost and quality compared to other brands. Good luck.
