I'm going to look at an International Harvester next week. It's a 684 model with a cab and loader (63hp). I don't know the hours or condition at this point. The price is $10,500. Is this a good machine? Is this a decent price?

For price I guess there are alot of questions need to be answered. What year? 4wd? Any other equipment? I think it has a good reputation for reliability but Art White could address this better as I only know a few local tractors and he has probably seen a few.

Those are a good stout tractor and they do have good resale value as they had a good transmission that gave the operator a shuttle type forward reverser for loader work. They did pioneer that type transmission in the farm tractors. The cab and the loader and hours are important to the value of the tractor. Many of the cabs are tough to get into on that style tractor. The emergency brake is a part to watch as it can cost a couple of grand to get fixed and they are easy to override being a transmission brake. They work well for stopping or holding the tractor on a hill but all to often they have been wornout from driving the tractor while on. For some people they just never got them fixed after the second time. We did try seat belt buzzers, horns and extra lites but for some they would still run them with it on. The 239 german built engine is a strong performer and if they are rebuilt it is wise to pay attention to the parts being used as there has been many updates to the engine parts to assist in cold weather starting. They should start on there own down below 30 degree's with no trouble.

Try to but it for around 8500. The price you quoted would get you poked fun at. Plus I speak from 20 years of sales experience. Wholesale on the tractor is commonly around 6500. It is an excellent tracor, though.

The 684 tractor depending on hours for auction prices comes in at 5500 for a low and 6966 for an average with 9750 for a high. Depending on the cab that could bring the price up normally by 1000 or more. The loader which we don't know what the actual make is or model used for those tractors comes in about 2500 if in good condition. Now using the book on the hours it should be between 6300 and 8400 hours. These values are showing the price of 10,000 being nearly aution prices. There are always lows and highs at auctions every where. Retail prices tend to stay just over auction prices in most areas on most products. There are different books to use for different areas. A 684 with loader in our area will actually sell for far more than the 10,000 quoted in our area but we are normally considered for lower hours than in other areas.
