Help - How do I smooth out my lawn?

Looking for ideas and opinions. I have 2 acres of lawn, that has never been very flat, but that has been getting bumpier over the years. The grass is pretty good, and the grade is fine, but the moles and frost have caused bumps, ruts and holes to develop over the years. How do I smooth it out so that I don't shake myself silly cutting it? Of course I cut too fast, don't we all? But I want to try to smooth it out a bit, as if it's shaking me up, it's loosening bolts and welds as well. I have tried rolling it, but it doesn't seem to make much difference. Maybe I need a bigger roller (2'x4')? So what is the best idea. I have all the toys available, but I don't want to have to tear out the grass and start from scratch, just smooth out the underlying dirt.Ideas?Big G

Get a coring aerator and run over it a few times the turn your landscape rakebackwards and drag it out. This will also help the lawn. I do it here in SW MS every couple of years.good luck Tony

I know it sounds crazy, but think about renting a big boy's roller that are used for paving. One of my neighbors rented one for his lawn about ten years back, it turned out pretty good. considering that you have two acres it may be your best bet. you may want to aerate before you roll and then again in the fall just to allevate some of the compaction from the heavy roller.

Amen to the coering aerator. That's going to bring up a bunch of plugs that will breakdown rather quickly and serve to fill in the holes. The trick then is to move the core residue to the low spots. The backward rear blade should do the trick for you. just don't be too aggressive in trying to flatten. Then go over lawn with a pull behind roller to flatten out where you put the residue. Trick is to criss cross (2 diagnal passes) with the corer to achieve lots of holes (more residue) and complete coverage. That ought to also improve overall health of the lawn via loosening soil and allowing penetration of rain thru the turf to engourage deeper roots.
