 Auger Info

I am looking for info on augers. Can anyone tell me if I need a down force attachment to dig fence post holes? Does it help speed the process. We have clay soil and few rocks but a pretty fair amount of tree roots. We will be using a Kubota 2710 to dig the holes with and a 12 inch auger.

Depends on the auger. The best kind have replaceable cutting teeth at thebottom edge of the auger and a replaceable screw tip as well. These kind ofaugers are very aggressive and do not require down pressure. In fact, theproblem is to keep them from trying to dig too quickly. I have never neededdown pressure....but there have been times when I could not get the auger out!

I can't imagine downforce would do you any good in hard clay or rock. You probably will end up spending half your time replacing shear-pins and unsticking your auger. For the size of your auger you will probably use on a 2710 I would stay away from any down-pressure attachments and go VERY slow and keep new cutters on. I rented a bobcat once to dig 24" holes for a pole barn in hard clay and the result was a broken hyd. line very quick, and yes it had down-pressure. I don't know if the auger manf. recommend a lot of down-pressure. Could it handle it??

You won't need down pressure to dig a 12" hole. I have a 10" auger and if I notquick enough with the 3pt it will screw itself into the ground and stall theengine. Now when I hook up the 24" flat bottom screw that's a whole differentstory. I extended the auger frame about 6' so two men could put pressure on theauger. It still takes awhile to dig a 4' deep hole.

For the most part, the type soil your digging in will determine the need for downpressure. I build fences and do landscaping, so digging post holes or planting trees is an everyday occurence for me. I find that in most cases especially spring time after the winter moisture, you will not need downpressure. However I have had to have downpressure during the spring on certain soil conditions and during a hot summer here in TN downpressure is a prerequisite. Down pressure is great when you can't sink an auger but the price difference between a light weight and a heavy weight digger w/downpressure is tremendous, and unless you are using one often I think the bobcat rental with digger makes alot of sense.
