 What else? Compacts!

OK ya'll.I'm in the market for a compact.I've been reading all these messages and info on the websites and darnnation! I'm so confused! I have used a Kubota L2350 (a friend had one) and it seemed to fit my uses just fine..( small gravel road to tend to,3 acres of grass to mow) But NOW Kubota goes and discontinues it!Well,I look at the 2500.Well I don't need 4WD BUT I want pwr steering? Ok so what now?No 2500 2WD with power steering! Then, I pass a tractor dealership here in town (Picayune,MS) and he has Yanmar grey market tractors (2000 models mostly). Should I consider them or what? I know of horror stories about parts availiblity on these babies..but I cant see spending 8000 dollars on a used tractor with no warranty whan I can get a new one for 11000 with warranty and financing ( which I need).I am partial to kubota (the have a legendary reputation in these parts) but not sure what to do.Any ideas??ThanksKeith

Sounds to me like you need to find a Kubota 2350 used. Shouldn't be too hard;they were sold widely. Here are some of the things I've heard people say: All of the brands work very well. Even the old US small farm tractors willdo the job for you. It doesn't have to be a 12 speed compact diesel to work well. 2wd is more than adequate. They can be even be better than 4wd if you add someweight and buy the next size larger tractor. Parts are not a problem. But finding cheap parts for odd brands can be. Yanmars are considered to be good to excellent tractors. Name brand tractors rarely break - they tend to wear out. Front axle bearings wear quickly on tractors used for rice farming....theymust be kept lubed. Roger L

 Yanmar 2000

I wouldn't be scared of a YM2000, especially 2wd. Yanmar sold the YM240 in the US, which is the equivalent US model. The major problem with parts availability is in the 4wd. Like any tractor inspect it thouroghly before buying. If you do buy a Yanmar, I'm a dealer & can supply you with any parts you may need.

I have a '76 Yanmar YM240. It's a very nice tractor. The only real problem I've had with it is two excessively worn gears in the transmission. It appears that the previous owner was shifting while still moving. Parts availability was absolutely no problem. Also remember, if you get a smaller John Deere (the 55 and 70 series, Idon't know about the 4000 series) it's made by Yanmar. The real question in my mind would be, can ou get parts. If this dealer also services the Yanmars, you probably don't have much to worry about. By the way, I don't have a dealer near me and I can still get parts mail order.

As for front bearings on the Japanese compacts, when I replace them in the tractors Isell, I replace them with seal bearings so they are maintenance free. If you arelooking for a good tractor, I have a Hinomoto E2304, (Same as Massey 1030)it is a 26 horsepower, 4WD. Parts are easy to get if you have a Massey dealer nearby. Price is $5000.Brent Pepper

Thanks all for the help.I would consider a L235 but all I've found around here for sale are either brand new <100 hrs or beat up buckets of bolts ( 7000 hrs,no hood, etc) so I see if I wanna go big Orange I'm gonna have to hunt one down!As for the Yanmar I will go ask the dealer about the front bearings, and also if he services them. But I am thinking it will have to be awfully cheap for me to resist a Kubota. Thanks Again,Keith

If you are interested in grey market tractors at reasonable prices we have them. E-mail me for a list. We can finance the greys with about 25% down with Case Credit. we do it all the time. If your credit history is good it won't be a problem.

I've heard that you replace the bearings Brent, and I've heard the same is doneby Len and some of the other well-known grey market dealers. A tip of the hatfrom me to you guys for being good citizens and not incidentally helping torestore the good name of Yanmar. Roger L.
