Seed bed preparation over an existing lawn

I have about 2 acres of lawn. Mostly weeds and bare spots. I'm thinking ofeither a renting a harly rake or purchasing a spike tooth harrow. The purposewould be to rough up the surface but also keep it smooth before seeding. I've never used either attachment before. Anyone have suggestions as to which would be better. (I have a JD 1070)Thanks

ED,By now you may have completed the task you mentioned above. As a kid, my parentswere faced with a similar problem. No weeds, grubs killed everything, weeds included. In an effort to save time/money/hard work, he did essentially what you are mentioning.Well, it didn't work. Eventually we had a local farmer use a disk to lightly pull up/cutthe sod. We didn't have a loader, so removed the sod the old fashioned way, by hand. This also enabled us to level the lawn better as well. It was a tremendious amount of hardwork, but the lawn looks great. Now I have my own 2 acre lawn with minor symptoms to your problem, I guess I'm in for more hard work. Only I am going to use a loader for the sod removal! Also depending on you soil conditions, you may consider spending the extra cast to buy 2-3 dumptruck loads of GOOD screened topsoil. For us, it was well worth the money.Depends how important having a good lawn is to you.
