I have a JD 1050... I'm interested in doing some landscaping (leveling driveway, moving dirt around, etc), I guess I need a box scraper but I really don't know what I'm doing. What is a good source of info on different implements, what they do and how to use them?

Hi Brian,The implements you use will be based on the work you need to do and the ability of you tractor to handle the tool. I don't know what horsepower you are using, but match the implement to your tractor and go have fun. Mostly, it is learning by doing and learning by making mistakes, and hopefully the mistakes won't be too expensive. For light grading and moving material around, a box scraper with teeth can loosen up hard surface and then pull it around to your liking. One of the most effective implements I have used is an adjustable 6' 3-pt blade that I modified with adjustable gauge wheels on each end. When dragging loose soil or gravel, it would pull it flat just like a road grader without the bumps caused by the tractor tire going over a rock or in a hole. Give yourself the benefit and just get out and work at it. You will learn by doing. My experience tells me there is no "one" implement that will do it all. Ask and listen to other tractor owners about their experiences. Look for used implements to start, to help keep your expenses down. Hope this helps you Brian. Later.

A JD 1050 is 33 hp at the PTO... fairly big as far as compact tractors go. I've spent a good bit of time on my dad's JD 850 (~22 hp IIRC), I've used the front loader on the 850 for the type of work I need to do, but it was slow and fairly tricky work, dragging bucket backwards to level and such. I figure there has to be a better way!BTW I did some surfing around after I posted and found "How to Make the Most of Your Tractor" by Brian May... http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN%3D0946688516/ssbtractorA/002-5170081-7106041 Does anyone have this book? Would you give a mini-review for my benefit?Brian
