The one weakness that I've heard is that the clutch/transmission case is not heavy enough, if a person wants to do heavy loader work & needs rear weights or with a backhoe.

James,The 4100 is a fine choice for some and a poor choice for others. What you want to do with the tractor determines what you need.

One slight correction. According to my Operators Manual, the JD factory specification for using the 410 loader on a 4100 is that the tractor be ballasted with (1) either 6 rear wheel weights (60 pounds each) or 75% liquid fill in the rear tires and (2) a ballast box with a total weight of 750 pounds. Similar requirements apply to the larger 4000 series tractors as well. Many compact tractors with loaders are not properly ballasted. Ballast is needed for stability as well as traction and weight in a ballast box or with an equivalent weight implement on the 3 point hitch helps reduce to loads on the front axles of the tractor.

I bought a 4100 about a month ago. I got the gear transmission, since I will be doing mostly mowing. I have a 60 inch finish mower and 4 foot box blade. No problems, and seems to have plenty of power for both the mower and blade. It seems to be really fuel efficient.
