TC 18 rpm drops and becomes sluggish when mowing

My tc 18 has 35 hours on it. I hooked up a brand new 4' king rotary mower to it and started cutting a 2 acre lot. At first there was great power but as a time went on it began to become sluggish almost to the point of shutting down. This would happen on a random basis. To get the rpms back up I would have to stop put the tractor and pto in neutral and then it would slowly build back up but again would lug down again soon after. I was wondering if it might be fuel. I topped off the fuel before I started mowing with fuel from a 250 gallon tank. The tank was filled earlier that day and it had an antibaterial cleaning addative added. Might this have contaminated the fuel ? Any thoughts ? Thanks

Sounds like you have plugged the filter. Did the tank have a filter on the pump?
Check the filter bowl for water!!!
Check filter and in tank filter for contamination.
If you have rust flakes this can be difficult as they will tend to drop off the in tank filter when suction stops.

A fuel problem seems a pretty good bet and that's what I'd continue to check out.

As an alternative, you might try again after the tractor cooled-down and do work that isn't especially heavy for the tractor or use the cutter at very slow ground speeds. A 4' cutter may be a heavy load for a TC18 depending on what was cut. The problem could be over-heating--especially if it was making black exhaust. I don't know if an 18 has a gauge of a light. If it has a light, I don't know if performance would start to deteriorate before the light came on. Checking the rad screen also would be good.

Thanks everyone for the help. I cleaned out the fuel system and all so good so far.
