 Feul gauge

I have just purchased a used TC29D with 190hrs on it. On the first time out I noticed the fuel gauge stays pegged on full. I remember reading about this problem before on this forum but can't remember the solution. I hope this isin't a bother for all you "normal" readers but I'd appreciate any suggections on what to try. I know from past warrenty reports that this tractor as had the fuel sending unit replaced so I'm guessing that's not the problem. And it's seems to me that it would be something electical anyway.

The gauge on my 1710 ( a relative of the TC) stays on full for quite awhile and then decreases rapidly. After topping up, I can work the tractor form some hours before the gauge decreases. The tank carries a lot of its capacity in the top. I guess there's a chance that the TC is operating normally.

What you would want to watch is that if the gauge stays full and when you open the fuel cap you get a swish of air and then look at you guage to see if it drops... If that happens you are having a vaccum issue.

Thanks TomG and BeeFarmer for the info, I checked the tank the old way with a small hose, so I know the tank is fairly low on fuel. BeeFarmer I noticed what your talking about, I did use the tractor for a couple hours and when I took the cap off it did get a "swish" sound. However the gauge still did not drop. Do you think I should simply get a new cap? I guess that's a cheap enough try. Thanks again, any other suggestion would be appreciated.

I suspect you have a bad sending unit. Most likely the sending unit is a potentiometer (variable resistor) that operates from a float in the gas tank. I use to have a Ford Bronco with the same problem. When I filled up, it would show full until the tank level fell to about a 1/4. Then the gauge would suddenly fall to a 1/4 reading. From there to empty it would register correctly. I think the upper part of the resistor was bad. Never did replace it since it required pulling the gas tank and I always knew I could count on it at the low end.

If it's like a car's fuel gauge system, if the gauge loses ground it will peg to full.

Jeff has probably hit it. I looked at the schematic for my JD950. 12 volts goes to the gauge. Then a wire goes from the guage to the sender which then goes to ground. The drawing does not show full detail, but I am guessing the the sender (basically a potentiometer) is at max resistance when the tank is full. A loose or broken wire between the guage and sender or between the sender and it's ground would appear as max resistance and the guage would read full.

I imagine a gauge could work either way, but I guess that loss of ground would place a gauge in the same position as when the tractor is off. A gauge is deflected when current passes through it and 'OFF' is zero current, so high resistance and off should produce the same gauge positions.

From experience I know that my 1710 temp gauge reads full hot when the tractor is off and when the ground is bad. I haven't had fuel gauge problems, but the fuel gauge reads empty when the tractor is off. I'd guess that the 1710 gauge reads empty at high resistance but other gauges may work differently.

Thanks guy's for all the info, I hope to be able to have time to take a look at the gauge and wiring this week. This stupid gauge drives me crazy, I don't really need it we have two other tractor's on the farm that don't have a gauge and were just fine with those. But it's one of those deals, it's on the dash and only a year old, the dang thing should work. By the way foud a good use for my tractor this weekend, with my bow I got a ten point buck over the weekend and the tractor worked great to haul it out of the woods. Don't think New Holland had this use in mind when they designed this thing. Again thanks for the info you people are alway's a source for good advice.

Sounds like a pretty good deer. I think we're going to miss our gourmet meals this year because nobody is hunting south of here where the deer are farm field fed. The bush fed ones around here just aren't near as tasty. So I wonder how a ten-point hitch works? Maybe it's an idea for NH.
