 NH engaging FWD - supersteer

can not engage FWd on supersteer to plow snow when pulling up lever on floor to left of seat can hear gearing action but wont engage what am I doing wrong - transmission in full time four wheel, thanks

I'm not sure if the problem is that the 4wd won't engage or won't engage only when SS is engaged. I have an extremely vague recollection that maybe 4wd is inoperative when SS is engaged, but that could be completely wrong. There are some participants here who have SS and maybe they'll comment.

When I hear of grinding when attempting to engage 4wd I think of dragging clutches. The tractor probably has HST so a dragging clutch wouldn't be the explanation. For a geared tractor, I would check for adequate free-play at the top of the clutch pedal travel.

The 4wd on my geared Ford does want to grind instead of engage sometimes. Usually 'tickling' the clutch to realign the gears cures the problem.

Front axle wind-up can occur on 4wd tractors because front drives normally lead the rears by several percent. Incorrect tire sets, abnormal tire pressure and operation on hard surfaces can result in wind-up. When I think of windup, I think of 4wd's that hard to nearly impossible to disengage. I cure the problem by lifting the front wheels with the loader. I don't think the windup is relevant to engaging problems, but I might lift the front wheels anyway just to see. However, if it's not engaging easily I sure wouldn't force it. The previous owner of my Ford gave me a repair bill doing that.

Operator's Manual states that you have to depress the clutch fully, then engage lever. You must use the clutch going into, or out of FWD (paraphrased).

If you have been plowing snow have you checked to see that nothing is froze up that would prevent movement?

Just takes a little bit of ice to bugger something up.

from lukespoon - took NH40D to dealer for tear down front drive shaft not engaging differential will advise of problem 190 hrs on machine

The super steer option comes with a full-time FWD system and has a clutch that engages when the front wheels lose traction. To lock the machine in FWD, you would shift it like any other machine. Since you ended up at the dealer, it sounds like the "locked" FWD option has not been used much and perhaps froze up??

Cutter, That is what I think I have going on with the front of my TC40D with SS. When I pulled on the lever to lock in the front end, it felt springy. When I got off the tractor and looked at it I saw that the cable to the front end clutch has a spring built into it. Sure enough, the lever on the front end seems froze up. Too bad I waited until it was out of warranty before I ever had to lock it in. I'll look at it myself when it gets warmer in the garage.

That is not an uncommon malady for machinery, lack of use is sometimes worse than using it regularly. I engage all of my PTO's and transfer cases on all of my equipment regularly as well as spray all linkages when I am performing maintenance.
