 rolled my mt372

lucky to be alive but my tractor won't run. i rolled it getting it out of my pu. after turning it back on all 4's it will try to start but appears to be binding or hung-up. it will turn over only about a quarter turn. i've removed and replaced the bent radiator mounting brackets thinking the fan housing was causing it to bind. now i'm thinking i must have bent the drive shaft or something? it has a front and rear pto and belly mower. it had only 800 hrs and always started and ran great--until now! Any advice will be appreciated.

allisn How long was it on it's side or top? Oil from the crank case will run past the rings and fill the top of the cylinders. Either let it set a couple of days so oil drains back or pull ALL of your injectors turn engine over several times to blow oil out. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT to be patient here. If one cylinder has any amount of oil left in it and engine starts on the other cylinders you most likely will break a connecting rod, crank or blow the head.

Good Luck Harvey

Harvey's comment about hydro-locking is a definite thing to check.

I once had a car that had a similar problem. It turned out to be a broken bell housing that allowed the starter pinion gear to jam the flywheel. With the spark plugs removed, I was able to free the engine by putting a socket on the crankcase damper and rotating the engine backwards. Still had to pull the engine to repair the bell housing though.

You might check for similar things and be aware that many diesel tractors have a hydraulic pump and injector pump in addition to the cam shaft that are driven off the crank from gears under the timing gear cover at the front. I'd check to see if there's obvious damage to the timing gear cover. If it were a gear tractor, I might check to see if it rolls easily when the TX is in neutral. I'd also disconnect anything from the PTO shafts and see if the shafts rotate freely. However, if they don't rotate the tractor may have pto brakes and then they shouldn't rotate. I'd also inspect the cases for separated joints and cracks.

I guess the tractor was running at the time and maybe the mower wasn't in use. My wife hit a rock with a 5hp BS rotary push mower last summer. It now does what you describe and it almost certainly is a bent crank. We have two junker 5-hp BS mowers and I guess I'll have to try to get one working from the two of them. However, a tractor and a push mover are entirely different things, and it doesn't seem too likely to me that simply rolling a tractor would bend a crank.

Take the two injectors out or if it's a 3cyl take three out and turn engine over by the big nut on the crankshaft or ignition switch. Check too see if oil or fuel comes out of the cylinders
