 2501-D Head Gasket Needed

My 2501-D has a blown a head gasket that I need to find. May need bolts as well. It is over heating and do not know why. I can not find a thermostat anywhere and the water pump is working fine. I also cleaned the radiator. I'm perplexed. Any suggestions on any of the above?

Kingjl,

I'm not sure why you believe you have a blown head gasket.

Unless you have oil in your radiator, or white smoke coming from the exhaust, I wouldn't jump to that conclusion.

Overheating can be caused by a bad head gasket, but there are many other things to consider as well.

Cleaning the radiator is something most people fail to do properly. I'm not sure how you went about doing that, but unless you used compressed air and blew out between the fins, the radiator probably isn't as clean as you believe.

Radiator caps can go bad. When they do, you'll have overheating problems. Many people overlook this as a possible problem. It's possible that you have the wrong radiator cap, as well. Having the correct radiator cap is a must.

Another thing a lot of people do wrong is to remove the hood and side panels, in an effort to aid in cooling. Actually, this does just the opposite. The hood and side panels actually aid in cooling. If they aren't in place, far less air travels through the radiator.

Overheating can also be caused by a lack of coolant, or not enough anti-freeze in the system.

You may also have a collapsed radiator hose, or a bad thermostat. Some tractors don't have thermostats.....yours may be one of those.

Let's attempt to work through this problem, step by step, before assuming that you have a bad head gasket.

Joel

I can furnish the head gasket. I can also furnish an adapter that will allow you to install a thermostat on your engine. It was not originally equipped with one. Bill - satohparts.com, mitsubishitractorparts.com

Joel,
Thank you for the very thoughtful and detailed reply. I cleaned the radiator with a power sprayer and I put new antifreeze / water into the radiator and fired it up and it immediately began spurting fluid out the radiator overflow hose. I took it to my neighbor who is a J. Deere mechanic and he called me later and told me that the head gasket was blown and he could not find a thermostat.I told him that my model did not have one. Maybe the radiator cap is why it has been prone to overheat since I got it and it is worse now because of the blown gasket. I can't thank you enough for this instruction and insight.
Jim
