 MF 231 diesel starter wiring

I'm Colin from Northeast PA and my father and I have a Massey 231. Its a real sharp tractor! We were troubleshooting a no-start problem and discovered a bad positive lead.. no problem except that we had taken all the wires off the solenoid and can't remember how they go back on!! We need to know which wires go on the top and bottom threaded terminals of the starter solenoid.
On ours, the yellow comes out of the solenoid from its own connection (I think this is the ignition switch wire).
The heavy black cable is the positive lead from the battery.
I think the red wire goes to the alternator.
And there is a brown wire that I think also goes up to the 'dash'.

Which wires are on the top connection, and which are on the bottom (how many and colors)? We really appreciate anything someone can tell us. Thanks!

Colin and Andy

The solenoid for my Ford 1710 terminals are coded on my wiring diagram as B and S (probably battery and solenoid). The solenoid itself has two threaded and one bayonet terminal. The battery line plus one smaller line that goes to the dash go on one threaded terminal (probably the one coded B) and the line to the motor goes on the other (it's probably uncoded or maybe M for motor). In no event should the battery and motor lines go on the same terminal because it would energize the starter. The tractor definitely should be in neutral during all testing.

I didn't notice if the wiring diagram codes are stamped on the solenoid when I burnished the terminals last fall. If my solenoid terminals aren't coded and I was in your situation I'd have to come up with a test that probably would take some guesswork on my part. Notice that I'm not making any recommendations here.

I found solenoid winding continuity tests in my repair manual. The tests are made with an ohmmeter with all wiring disconnected. The pull-in winding is tested from one threaded terminal to the bayonet terminal. The hold-in winding is tested from the bayonet terminal to the solenoid case. So, it seems like there should be continuity from one threaded terminal to the solenoid case but not from the other. The battery line should go on the terminal that doesn't have continuity. Another guess is that the battery line and the smaller red one go together on the B terminal.

That's my best guess at the moment and I'd probably be taking some risk if I actually did it. Maybe somebody else has something that contains less guesswork.

Is this a Polish Ursus 231 or Turkish UZEL 231S?
