 1225--tippy and weak?

I've lived with the 1225 hydro for a couple of years. Is it just me, or does that engine block ride high above those front wheels? I seem to spend all my time repositioning my tractor to avoid tipping on even modest slope. Also, I've yet to break traction with the wheels; the hydro tranny doesn't supply much power to the wheels.

I donít know the 1215, but it may be similar to many small tractors. A higher engine gives more ground clearance, which often is desirable. I don't know if the tractor is ballasted either with loaded tires or wheel weights, but ballasting often is done as much to improved stability than to improve traction. Many small tractors have to use low range if their HST's have to work heavy drafts or steep hills.

Thanks for the response. It only has two ranges, and I
always use the low one. The loader balances against the
mowing deck on back, and I really don't want to add a lot
of weight by, say, filling the tires with foam--the tranny
is already pretty weak, even in low range (high range is
basically only useful for driving between jobs on the
road). I guess the 1225 is more of a "Midwest" tractor,
good for open level terrain but not such a good bet for
my hilly, wooded slopes.

Yes, more weight is harder on drive trains and pto clutches. Also harder on lawns and going up hills too, so excess weight is good to avoid. Adjusting the wheels wider or reversing them might help stability a bit. Other then that getting more weight below the CG or a different tractor seems like the main solutions. Despite its disadvantages, loaded tires lowers the CG more than other types of ballast, but it also may crete some instability at road speeds.

I don't know if the power on hills is abnormal for the tractor or not. However, I believe that pressure tests can be done on HST's to check for normal pump pressures and relief valve settings. I think that what usually happens when a HST quits in high range on hills is that the relief valve is opening, not necessarily that the engine is out of power.

Andy,

I've used a Massey 1235 w/ MMM and FEL, and didn't think it to be any less stable on my property than a JD 855 I also had there. I did think the ground clearance of the MMM on the Massey was not as good as some of the others, but that's a different story.

On the 1235, the wheels were set wide, and the rear tires were loaded.

I had no trouble w/ the small hill on my place, but I'm in WI, and its not real hilly here. I could do my hill in any range (think it was a three speed HST).
