 1993 MF1240

We are waiting to get a look at a 1993 MF 1240 4wd with Great Bend FEL that is coming in on trade at our local dealer. I have read the archives and noticed only good reviews of this model. But they were very late model units. Does anyone know if the 1993 has any significant differences from the late models?

Thanks,

Don M

I don't know any particulars, but have not heard any negatives. In general the MF tended to be very reliable units and did not change their models as quickly as some others. If you get serious, I have a source of information - an old MF dealer friend - but it would take a few days to a week to get hold of him.

It seems we just don't hear as much about the Massey as we do the Kubotas, Deeres, and New Hollands, but there are actually quite a few of them in use in my area, a local dealer, etc. and like Roger, I haven't heard anything negative about them. If it had the features I wanted at the right price, I wouldn't hesitate to buy one.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy one either. Every time I'm down at the Massey dealer he "forces" me to drive a few of them around.....which I do.... My perception is that it is a very solid machine, nice wide operator's area, everything seems to be heavy duty and well laid out. The engine is quiet and smooth and the transmission is flawless. So why aren't Massey tractors more popular? Darned if I know.....whjich never stopped me from guessing. And my guess is that it is mostly a popularity thing. They do have a sort of boxy industrial look to them, and maybe that works against them. I know that in the larger ag tractors the Massey is selling very well again after a couple of decades of being unremarkable. Their big tractors are not boxy at all. Very sleek, modern, and sporty - in fact they look like some sort of exotic race car. There also seems to be levels of dealership with Massey. The local compact Massey dealer doesn't sell big Masseys, but there is a bigger dealership that sells big and little both. After looking at the big Massys the compacts on the lot simply look businesslike. But without the comparison, the compacts look squared off, boxy, and dated. And perhaps it is as simple as that. Around here, people that buy Massey tend to come from an ag background and plan on keeping the machine for the long haul.
I do have some old MF1240 literature (of course!) and I'll look it up tonight to see what it says.

Roger, please check, I'd appreciate it.
Someone emailed me privately that maybe the early years had a "fabricated" front end. Which doesn't sound good. I'll be sure to pay attention when it comes in to the dealer.
They do look clunky.

Yep. I just looked that tractor up and it is the one I thought it was. Definitely worth a look. I don't know about a "fabricated" front end or what that means. Will continue looking.
