Do not know your tractor but have no certain idea on what could be common there. Have you checked your hyd oil for the lift? It maybe your pto uses hyd oil pressure to engage it. If it uses a switch or simple lever to engage it probably does. ....

Once again, someone asks a question about a tractor without noting the version of tractor. The 255 was supplied with both a live and an independent PTO. The live version has a two stage clutch, the independent has a split torque clutch and usually a live remote valve. Diagnosing the symptoms described can vary greatly between the two tractors. ....

Okay. Are you aware that the live pto and hydraulic lift pump both drive from the same source. When the pto portion of the clutch is disengaged, both of them stop turning, not just the pto shaft. If you now find that neither is working at all, your problem could be in the clutch itself. Have you removed the cover plate from under the bell housing and looked for anything unusual in that area? You may find fragments of clutch lining and/or other evidence of disc or clutch failure. ....
