Hi all, Be gentle as it my first post on here.
I have got a mf 168 4x4 but the odd problems.
Is it normal that the tractor runs away in high multipower. I have been told in low it will.
And the 4x4 only works in low multipower.
Any knowledge would be welcome
Many thanks

Bonjours et bienvenu!
"... tractor runs away in high multipower...." I don`t know this model, but if you mean that the tractor (in gear) moves by itself, my first question would be how many RPMs the engine turns at when in neutral and at idle speed (if the transmission is a form of automatic), or how properly the clutch is adjusted (if the transmission is manual). ....

I mean if you are driving down a hill in gear the engine doesn't hold you back.It doesn't matter what the RPMs is.
Not to good when you have got a trailer behind you and going down a hill its a bit lively.
Hope this helps. ....

Now I understand.
Even in a low gear? (It can't hold you back in a high gear but it should in a low gear.)
What kind of transmission does it have, manual or some kind of automatic? ....

auerbach hi,
It is a manual with the multipower its 12 forward 4 back
I think i just found the problem there is a vent on the side of the gear box near the hand break that had a bolt stuck in it with a load of silicone round it.
What this was doing is forcing the oil out vai the 4x4 shaft. when i looked at the tractor i checked all the oil.
So yesturday i checked it and refilled it and NOW it seem to be ok.
MF 168 is the high spec version of the 165. Stil scratching my head about the 4x4 only working in low multipower ....

The problem seems to be with the transmission, and I don't know what "multipower" is. There seems to be a double clutch in your model.
If you google "mf 168" or "mf 168 multipower"
you will find various owners around the world who might be able to help, and YouTube clips.

G.Day masseymad
The 168 is the multipower version of the 165.
Multipower allows you to change up or down a gear when on the move say for example you are travelling along and start to go up a hill and the tractor starts to lug or slow down, by changing into low multipower will change the transmission down a gear and allow the tractor to maintain speed .
one thing to be aware of and i think you already know is the fact that when the tractor is in LOW Multipower the engine will not hold/slow the tractor down when going down a hill, this can be quite dangerous if you are not aware of the situation so always select HIGH Multipower when going down hills just to maintain and be aware of
your rate of speed.
Another benefit of the Multipower is when in HIGH Multipower and you approach a hill and you stop halfway up press/Disengage the clutch, the transmission will lock and the tractor will not run back down the hill ,this function is known as Hill Hold .
One thing you will find that if you want to change gear in this position the gearlever will not disengage ,this is due to the fact that the weight of the tractor is SITTING on the gearbox to change gear you must first select LOW Multipower And at the same time hold the tractor with the brakes ,you will then find the gears can be selected with ease, always remember to be in HIGH Multipower when you feel it would be more safe to maintain constant control of your speed.
I wont go into the internal goings on with the Multipower apart from saying it a hydraulicly operated clutch pack .
I hope this helps yourself and others interested in the subject.
Regards
Hutch.

P.S.
I forgot to mention the 4x4 can be used with high or low multipower the range does not matter.

I can understand the "running away" in low multipower. Multipower has an overrunning clutch in the gear train to allow the tractor to slow down gradually when downshifting without load. IH used the same principle in its Torque Amplifier.
I do not understand the run away in high range. Are you sure it was high range on the Multipower lever? The other range position does not matter.
Don't know about the front wheel assist, either. ....

Hi
to check that indeed the multipower IS working select say second gear high range and driving up a slight hill first select low multi power and using the hand throttle set to a constant speed ,about 1400 rpm ,then select HIGH Multipower you should feel the transmission change ,similar to an automatic transmission in a car If not the multipower is NOT working.
With the engine STOPPED and standing on the left hand side facing the battery operate the multipower lever and watch the multipower linkage you will see a small shaft coming from inside the gearbox it is connected by a clamp loosen and move the bracket DOWN THE SHAFT THAT COMES FROM THE Multipower control lever just a little bit say two to three m.m retighten the clamp and try again , what you want to do is PUSH THE SHAFT COMING OUT OF THE GEARBOX FURTHER DOWN Remember just a little bit at a time if it still does not work the hydraulics will have to be checked using test gauges .
Thats it

G,Day massey mad ed.
You say running away,Give me an example of your understanding of "running away".
Is it say you are in third gear high range High Multipower going down a hill with a loaded trailer and the tractor increases in speed ???????????.

Hutch hi,
It doesnt matter if its 1 2 or 3 gear in high it still increases speed. Not to good for the blood pressure. Even worse with trailer behind.Had a look at lever and all seems ok so am know thinking of checking oil pressure and go from there.
Thanks again

G,Day masseymad .
Let me ask ,if you drive along on a flat road /track say in low multipower and you change into HIGH multipower does the tractor speed increase and the engine reduce rpm like a manual transmission does?.

Most of the time the engine will reduce the speed of the tractor. But sometimes the engine speed will drop to 800 rmp and the tractor will speed up like I say with a trailer on a slope not good.
This is only in HI as LOW is just a reduction gear.
Hope this helps

The tractor is not going into HIGH Multipower,If you check what I said about adjusting the linkage in an earlier post you may find this helps.

Hi Masseymad .
The first thing to check is the multipower pump pressure to do this requires a test manifold which could cost a lot of money,
Your local massey dealer may be able to help.
To remove the multipower pump requires the tractor to be split between the gearbox and the differential housing ,also the hydraulic top lift cover has to be removed,This is quite a big job and requires proper equipment to carry out safely
The other thing is the multipower clutch pack but going on your information it works sometimes and not others normally if the clutch pack is worn out it will shudder and slip, it wont work one minute and not the next??.
Thats all .

Hutch hi,
That sounds more like what is happening. The tractor has done just over 7000hrs. So this winter looks to be busy.
The lift arms bounce up and down when not under load but dosent seem to be so bad when under load. So will go round every thing.
Once again many thanks

Let me know how you are going with the tractor and if you need the test procedure I will post them.
