Can anyone tell me what year this tractor is and what it would be worth? I also would like to know what to look for as far as problems the machine may have
thanks

BH3131,

The MF235 tractor was made in 1975 and 1976. It has a 45 horsepower, 3 cylinder Perkins diesel engine.

The 235 has a few drawbacks.

It weighs in at over 4000 pounds, without a loader. I don't believe any were ever offered with 4-wheel drive. The one you're looking at appears to have ribbed front tires, meaning that it's likely only a 2-wheel drive tractor. Additionally, it may not have power steering.

If you plan to use the MF235 for loader work, prepare to stock up on some sort of shoulder muscle pain reliever. You'll have one hell of a time steering that tractor with a loader on it.

I put the MF235 in about the same class as the Ford 9N tractor. There are thousands of better machines on the market today.

Joel

BH, that tractor was used a lot on the small farms in my part of SC, tobacco farms. It is a farming tractor. For that the weight is good. If memory is correct it comes closer to the Ford 3000 than any N model.

Based upon memory again, not sure on power steering or not, never have seen a four wheel drive model, dry brakes (not as good the more modern brakes), had a good lift (better than the Ford N's and 601) for cultivation use. Believe you will find it has a two stage clutch for PTO use. In this area they carried a good reputation for farm use. MF used two remote hyd set ups, one built in and one dealership added on. Think they offered this on the 235. The added on model required the 3 pth to be fully raised to use the remote and believe it did not has as much pump capacity either. The added on system is on top of the trans where the factory model levers were with the 3 pth and draft lever were. This tractor has the steel rims which were the lowest price rims. If it is British built model it was there best finish one. NAPA did carry a lot of MF parts.

As to price, MF has not held its price as well here as has Ford or JD. You do not sell as many new ones either. kt

One of our neighbors had one from the time I first knew him in the early eightys till he retired in about 2000. It was his chore tractor on a medium size livestock farm, he had a loader on it. I used to do his chores when they were on vacation and yes by todays's standards it was crude little tractor, no power steering that I rtemember but as I remember he never had much trouble with it. I was always quite impressed with how easily it would start in the winter, I think it had a Perkins three cylinder diesel???? Frank.

thanks you guys. I have been kicking around the idea of selling my JD 2210, which is now to large for the work I have to do around the house, yet to small for the hobby farming that I want to do at our 30 acre place in Camp Creek WV. My thinking was get rid of the 2210, and get a used zero turn mower to handle the 1.5 acres of mowing here at the house, and maybe get the 235 to reclaim some old fields that we have up there which are very very rocky and are far to rough for the 2210 to get in shape for food plots. I would then not have to shell out any $$$ and be able to get everything done. Although the older tractor has some appeal to it and would do the work, I am pretty spoiled with the moden features that are offered in the market today. I have thought about just paying the neighbor up in WV to get the feilds in shape and then take over with the 2210 to maintain them. The first plot will be 2 acres, and then over the next couple years 4 more acres. Any thoughts or suggustions.
Thanks for the replies

BH3131,

Two acres isn't going to be a whole lot of trouble for any farmer. I'm just guessing that your neighbor in WV has a rock picker that he uses on his tractor. If so, I'd hire the friendly neighbor to break up your two acres, remove the rocks, etc.

Over the next couple of years you might find yourself an old Oliver, Farmall, or even a Minneapolis Moline for little or nothing. Use one of these old workhorses to break up the remaining acreage.

Keep your utility tractor. You'll use it for a thousand different things on the farm.

Best of luck to you.

Joel
