 Considering a Long

I am considering the purchase of a Long Landtrac 280 from my usual equipment dealer. The machine will be used for general work around a 10 acre property. My question is simple. Being new to this, what other machines should I consider, given they would have to be much better to overcome my loyalty to my dealer? Tim

 Considering a Long

Long has had a good reputation for reliable, no-frills utility tractors, but have had a history of financial problems. They have recently diversified and are currently trying to play with the big boys in the multinational agribusiness league. Time will tell if they can be successful. Here's my concern. They now market 3 different tractor lines, manufactured in 3 different countries: LongTrac (by UTB, Romania), LandTrac (by LG, Korea), and FarmTrac (by Escorts, India). While this may help them guarantee a supply of new tractors to their dealers in case of supply problems with any one of their oems, it seems to me they may have difficulty keeping up with such a diversity of parts and service information for every make and model over time. Like Sears, I expect Long's parts availability for tractors more than a few years old to be spotty, at best. I don't know what your expectations are, but unlike cars, tractors are usually long-term investments. For me, this means seeking out manufacturers with excellent reputations for long-term support, such as Deere, Kubota, New Holland, Massey-Ferguson, etc. I agree your relationship with the local dealer is important, but his ability to support your Long tractor is almost completely dependent on Long's ability to support him.

Ken - thanks for the background. I am considering the Long 280 and the Kubota 2710. both are about the same price with a loader. The Long is a much more substantial machine, weighing almost twice as much. The Kubota has a more sophisticated transmission, with one pedal control as opposed to a shuttle shifter. I think this decision comes down to taking to parts risk with my dealer for a bigger machine. Tim

I have the 2710 and it is wonderful. If the cost is about the same I would get the 2710. Kubota is going to be around for a while and the parts are available on the web at tractorsmart.com as well as at lots of local dealers.

I HAVE A 1996 LONG 2610 THE TRACTOR IS USED FOR HAYING
WITH A 7 HEAD GAIL DISK MOWER AND 1475 GAIL BAILER AND
DOES A GOOD JOB. THE ONLY PROBLEM HAS BEEN A TRANSMISSION
PROBLEM WITH 1ST AND 2ND GEAR NOT SINC THE TEETH HAVE WORN
AND THE TRACTOR WILL JUMP OUT OF GEAR WHEN GOING DOWN HILL.
MY FRIEND HAS HE SAME TRACTOR AND WE BOTH HAVE HAD THEM REPAIRED AT AT $1,800. I HAVE BEEN CAREFUL AND STOPED THE
TRACTOR OR PUT THE TANS IN 3RD TO STOP THE TRANS BEFORE SHIFTING IN TO FIRST OR SECOUND. MY HAS NOT GIVEN ANY
MORE PROBLEMS, BUT MY FRIENDS TRACTOR HAS BEGAN TO DO THE
SAME JUMPING OUT OF GEAR WHEN GOING DOWN HILL.
