Why (how) hp difference between Kubota M4900 and M5700?

Since the basic engine specs between the M4900 and M5700 appear to be the same, where does the extra HP come from?

I see the rated hp for the M5700 is 61 at 2800 rpm, while the M4900 is rated at 54 at 2600. Is it just a matter of rating the same engine at a higher RPM that makes the difference?

Since I have the M4900; can I "upgrade" some sort of engine control unit to bump up the rpm/HP? (Not that I was going to but...)

That is about the only difference between them that they have made us aware of. The manufacturers do have different ways of doing this both with gas and diesel engines. On the electronic cars and trucks they often only have to change the chip to do the same.

Art,

Thanks for the prompt response.

I guess I need to get a parts book for both models and do a comparison. Seems to me that the M4900 will have some sort of mechanical or electronic limiter to prevent the RPM from going above the max rated for that model. Traditionally, from a wear and stress standpoint, the lower Rs on a tractor would seem like a good idea, but with a 5 cylinder engine, spinning it up a bit more would not seem to be a problem.

Cheers, Dave Edwards

As a servicing dealer and having people that are trained to work on these as well as being active tractor pullers(50%of my tech's) we play all the time with the mechanical pumps as you have on your tractors. We do not do the final adjustments on site but send them out to people who do it all day and have the proper machine to test the results before it gets installed on the tractor. We do recommend and advise as to our expected results from them and they fine tune our requests so it is a plus for all.
