 L2550 need know now

Just traded for a L2550. I am not new to tractors. Most of mine
have been old tractors.(1948-1963) From what I have read mine is a GST.It has a lever on the left of the steering for forward and reverse, on the right a lever 1-4 then a high and low on the left fender. Do you use the clutch to put these in gear or how do they work. I bush hog mostly what RPM is best.I ran about 2000 RPM the other day and it worked well. The brakes squeek when applied, is this normal, they work good. Does this tractor have depth control.Do you use any fuel additives. Any does and don't will be helpful. Thanks Pup

puppie - no clutch is need to shift. You can shift from foward to reverse with out the clutch & change speeds 1 - 4 without the clutch. The only time you will need to use the clutch is if you are scopping into a pile with the loader. Only because you will have alot of pressure on the tranny at that time. so as soon as the bucket is full, you press in the clutch, Shift that left column lever in to reverse, let out the clutch & go. That lever is called the shuttle shifter. The only other time you will need the clutch is for engaging the PTO & that goes for all tractor including hydro. You can do loader work with out the clutch but it isnt recommended in the manual. If you use the clutch it will preserve your tranny.

If you look at the serial number the end will probably end in DT not GST. From what you described you have a standard transmission whith shuttle. You should be using the clutch to do all shifts. The four speed is syncro and the rest shifts easy.

For running the mower or any other implement your tach should have an indicator as to where 540 PTO rpm is that is generally where you want to run it, but you can very it depending on conditions.

The L2550 was made from the late 80s to the early 90s, and the Glide Shift tranny (GST) was offered, but rare. Your description is of the DT (Dual Traction) gear tranny, and unfortunately there are no synchonizers. A full stop and clutch activation is required for each shift including fwd-to-reverse. You have 8 fwd gear ratios and 7 reverse ratios, as 8th speed in reverse is locked out.

Kubota also makes other gear trannies, also called "DT", incuding one that uses a stick shift on the tranny itself, and the new Fully Synchonized Tranny (FST).

I loved my old L2550DT, but those newer trannies (GST and HST) are to die for.

Thanks Guys for the info I just came in from working on the
L2550, I have a voltage regulator going out. It will charge
sometimes and not other times took the cover off and put pressure on the contacts and it will charge. Just something else to work out. The trans, you do have to press the clutch to change gears. Tried it also. Pup
