 L2550: Clutch/PTO Question

Bought a L2550 today, 1200 hrs. Ran it trhough the gears, seemed fine except when I go to engage PTO, I get grinding, as if clutch not disengaging. Engine seems to run good, gears seem functional, PTO works once engaged. Got it home: now, when I push clutch all the way in, it sounds like the starter is running, no kidding. The clutch goes in far enough to disengage, but any further, the starter kicks in. Any ideas on cause? Thanks in advance.

 L2550: Clutch/PTO Question

Hi,
Just wondering, if you know if you have a dual stage clutch? In other can you push down on the clutch ~1/2 way to disengage the transmition, all the way down to disengage the PTO?

 L2550: Clutch/PTO Question

I think it is a dual stage clutch. The second stage appears to be not disengaging fully. The first stage is fine. I can't see how a mechanical clutch could cause an electric starter to crank? It only does it while the motor is running, so I don't think its causing a wire to short. There does appear to be a push switch, that the under/back side of the clutch pedal, on the bottom, engages when the pedal is fully depressed. Not sure what it does?

that button is a safty start switch. if the starter is engaging then there is an obvious shot some where in the start circut. as for the clutch releasing your local dealer might be able to adjust it. this is a complicated procedur and should not be attempted by the do it your selfer.

 L2550: Clutch/PTO Question

I figured the switch was either a safety start, or some kind of electronic clutch. I'm pretty handy, but I don't think I want to get into this one. Depending on the estimate, it may be time to stop fooling with used equiptment and buy a shiny new one. Thanks for the heads up.

 L2550: Clutch/PTO Question

Your PTO clutch needs attention. Chances are it needs to be split and it does take some talent to do this job. They are good systems and used thru out the industry. Chances are what is happening is the disc is shot and binding into the starter and driving it which is not a good situation.

Thanks Art. That sounds like what is probably happening. Not sure if I'm going to go through with it, but at least I have some idea of what I'm up against.
