 Front Axle Lubrication

Can anyone tell me the correct fluid for the front axle and front wheel gearcases on an L225DT? They smell like heavy gear lube and that seems right to me but I was hoping someone could verify it. Also, I see fill/check and drain plugs on the gearcases but only a fill on the top and a drain on the bottom of the differential/axle. How do you know how much to put in? Thanks in advance.

Somebody here must know the specifics. I can say that my mid-80's Ford uses the same oil for the TX/hydraulic system in the front axle and I think that's very common except on older farm tractors. There is a fill cap with a dipstick on top of the axle. There's one drain on the front diff and one at the bottom of each of the two final gear reduction cases on the axle ends. It takes even thin oil awhile to fill the final reduction cases. When changing the oil, I check the reduction case drains to make sure the cases have been filled and then top up the level.

Talk to Ronnie Bowman over on Tractor Smart. He can answer any questions you may have and get you some great prices on Kubota parts. Very good folks to deal with.

Tom,
I did check for a dipstick under the fill plug on the differential and there isn't one. I assumed the axle and the gearcases had to be separate reservoirs because the check plugs on the gearcases are below the bottom of the axle. If it was a common reservoir filled to the checkplugs on the gearcases, the axle would be dry. I looked at the exploded view in the parts book a little closer and it doesn't look like the whole axle housing is full of oil, just the differential housing. So there are three separate reservoirs. I still don't know what to put in them or how full to fill the differential. I'll take Chief's advice and check with Ronnie. Thanks for your help.
