 3 pt. hitch mower size

I ended up with a great deal on a 72" finish mower - but my hydro 16 PTO HP B2100 might isn't technically rated to take it. If it seems to run okay (except for slow-downs when the blades bottom) - will I tax my PTO? Can I hurt the tractor?

thanks,

rick

Big mowers have a lot of inertia and they do put extra strain on pto drives--especially when starting them up.

It's not all that uncommon to use an over-sized implement. The added weight may make a tractor more tippy but usually the power requirements can be moderated by going slower or taking smaller bites.

The distinction between wear and damage can be a fine one. You probably would get shorter life from the pto drive. I'd avoid starting and stopping it frequently. If it has a mechanical pto clutch, I might add an over-running clutch if there's not already one. An over running clutch would reduce stress on a clutch each time engine rpm decreased. However, the mower blades then would free-wheel for awhile after the tractor was shut down and may be a safety hazard and would defeat a pto brake if the tractor has one.

I agree with Tom and Steve. A 72" mower is substantially heavier than designed for your tractor and requires more horse power than that to operate. If you are easy with pto engagement and gradually spool up to rpms and slow down you may get by but my suspicion is that it will bog down badly in heavier vegetation. You may need front weights to keep the tractor from tipping on hills. Over all......just not a good idea but I am a good dealaholic myself. ;o)
