 Smaller Sickle bar mowers use?

I am about to purchase a John Deere Model 9, 3 point hitch that is six and a half foot sickle bar mower to run on my 24hp Kubota B2400. Does anybody have any experience with this mower for cutting hay? I don't and would love to get some advice on operating this mower. Currently it is in the middle of a field covered with snow and I want to mount it on the tractor and check it out. What should I watch out for? Thanks for ideas....

I thought about getting one of these for my 670. I suggest you do a search for "670" and "sickle bar mowers".

Basically, there's a potential for side roll-overs and the sickle bars are a bear for maintenance. However, I wasn't going to cut hay. I was going to get one in lieu of a rotary cutter.

I think your option is a little heavy for the tractor. You might try just a 5'.

I'm not at all familiar with a #9 JD mower, but if it was originally mant to go on an regular size small farm tractor then it probably was designed to mount on a tractor with a much wider wheel stance than yours, hence the end of your sickle bar will be much farther out from your right rear tractor tire than 6.5 ft.. This may create an overballance situation that could be dangerous. I'd do some measuring before I bought it. Sickle bar mowers have been use for ages to cut hay. They will do a fine job as long as the sickle bar is kept in good repair, a worn out sickle will drive you nuts by being pluged most of the time.

This implement should be fine on most 24 hp tractors, the bar rides on the ground. You might put water and CACL in your tires to give a little extra weight. The old model 9's were a little cantakerous and slow. The new versions of sickle cutters have double cutting actions and improved pitman arms. They will cut up around 7 mph. The old style cutters were less than 3 usually and would plug.
