is a LIVE PTO really that important?

I am looking at buying a 2001 Kubota L2600DT with 40 hours on it. I intend to mow my 10 acres with it. I am told that it does not have a live PTO and that I need one for mowing.
Why is that? Can't you just spin the blades up to speed in Neutral and then put it in gear and go? Why are so many people telling me to get a live PTO?

Not the best choce with out the overrunning clutch as you could wind up in the hedge row that you wanted to stop at before the mower drove you into it!

I guess I don't know what live PTO means. I always just assumed it meant that the PTO has power when the tractor isn't moving. Of course you don't want the PTO to stop whenever the tractor stops!! Why would you? How can you rototill or get a smooth mow job if the PTO stopped all the time?

I guess live PTO means something else.

Live PTO means that the TX can be clutched and shifted without interrupting power to the PTO. With a TX driven PTO, power to the PTO is stopped whenever the clutch is disengaged. However, the drive remains powered when the TX is in neutral and the clutch is out. In practice, a TX driven PTO isn't as limiting as it might sound. I'm happy to have live PTO myself because my snow-blower chute clogs when I stop if I don't run the PTO long enough to clear snow off the auger.

This issue does always seem to create confusion. First, lets assume the 2600 has an overrunning clutch built in. My 78 Kubota B6000 did, so I would think a '01 would. So no worries stopping the tractor. Bottom line, if using a rear finish mower or brush hog, when you step on the clutch to stop the tractor or shift gears, the blades will stop turning. If you have a lot of obstacles, or do a lot of backing up etc, this is a problem. For snowblowing it is a big problem as noted before. I have never had a live PTO, and I can survive just fine. But you need to know what you are getting before you make a purchase, for sure.
