i recently bought a BX 1800 and after putting about 20 hours on the tractor, it is relatively difficult to start. it cranks like it wants to, but then sputters. it really shakes the whole tractor pretty bad and i'm worried that i'm ruining the engine. i can't find anything in the owner's manual that gives a specific glow plug time to warm up.

this is the first diesel i've ever owned, so i don't know too much about them.

thanks for your help

Chris,
We just bought a BX2200 and have put a little over 25 hrs on it. It is also our first diesel too. So far we have had no trouble starting it. In the operator's manual for BX1800 & BX2200, on page 19, it says over 32 degres 2 to 3 seconds, 32 to 23 degres 5 seconds and 23 to 5 degres 10 seconds. You should also be setting the throttle about 1/2 to start it. I hope this helps.
Dwight

The engine will be breaking in over this time and the compression will be actually increasing as the rings and valves seat. I would start with a little heat and allow it to warm up before working it.

Just wait till it quits belching white smoke and hit the heat while its sputtering. It will clear and everything is just fine.

Jeff, the heat is a key stop on the way to strarting. So he needs to pause at the last detent, count the required # of seconds and then turn one more click to engage the starter.
It has probably gotten colder outside since he bought the tractor and that may be a factor.

Chris, where do you live??

Yup, it is just like my B-2150 and a former JD 2010 which is the key, but you can give it heat after it starts and is still sputtering.

Learned some thing new today, Jeff. You can turn the key to preheat while the engine is running. Whodathunkit?
