 When to use 4x4 ?

According to the mechanic at my local dealer, he says most people leave the 4 wheel drive engaged all the time. As I'm only driving on dirt, grass, or gravel (no hard surfaces)is this OK, or will it cause any problems down the road ?

As long as you stay off pavement, you'll be OK (now, driving across a 2 lane road wouldn't hurt either...don't drive down the road though).

However, why stay in 4WD? It's just a quick lever movement to put the tractor in or out of FWD.

 When to use 4x4 ?

I've found that when turning sharply in 4wd the front tires tend to tear the turf. I usually don't use it unless the back tires spin.

I try not to use the FWD mowing but find that I will spin the rears in some areas (JD 955). Once in a while the fronts will dig if soft and turning sharp, so it is a catch 22 aituation.
I normally take it out of FWS if I am traveling at any speed even on grass or gravel.

Pretty much my experience as well. Sharp turns on grass tear the turf more in 4wh than in 2wd. Work that needs some traction, like getting forks under something, can leave tire burns on the grass in 2wd but have no tire slippage in 4wd.

I can't see putting wear and tear on the front drive train if it isn't needed. Some loader work, anything at speed or on pavement I do in 2wd. 4wd does help with tractor stability when working on hills. Some people who use 4wd all the time may have very hilly property.

I am in line with everyone else here. I use 2wd unless I am mowing on a steep slope or moving dirt or dragging something heavy. 4wd gives better braking action up and down a slope and better traction when moving dirt or pulling.
