Hydrostatic or Gear Transmission/ R4 or AG Tires

I am planing on purchasing a compact 4wd tractor in the near future.I am leaning towards the Kubota L3010 or L3410.I am wonding if anyone has any real life experiences with hydromatic transmissions on these or other brands of tractors.I am concern with durablity for the long haul. I have talked to various dealers and they all tell me the hydro's are bullet proof. I have had hydo transmissons on smaller garden tractors for the past 20 years and have seen little problems, but I am concerned with the hydro with a larger horsepower tractor and under more severe loading conditions such as plowing gardens, plowing snow, pulling logs, etc.I am planning to use this tractor mostly for mowing a 5 acre field, plowing a garden, snow removal, and some loader work. I don't want to have problems with this tractor! I want something that will last for the next 30 to 40 years without any major problems.I am also wondering if I should spring for the R4 tires ($800.00) or put the money into the higher horsepower tractor the L3410. I am concerned with mowing my yard with the the standard AG tires. I don't want to tear up my yard but I believe the AG's will be better in the mud and snow than the R4's.Thanks

You have a mixed bag of jobs, some would be best with ag tires and some with the industrials. My thoughts are the industrials would give you the floatation for mowing and some cleaning ability for the back forty. The hydro is best for mowing and loader work, but the glideshift would be better for the logging and garden plowing unless you are refering to rototilling than the hydro comes in being number 1. Take the percentages of the hours you will spend doing each chore and than you will know better as to which style is right for you.

I'm really impressed with my hydro drive and R4 tires on my 20hp Cub. Definitely go with the R4 if you are going to be doing any finish mowing, unless the land and high and dry.
big ed
