I can't find the alternator on this (new to me) tractor. there seemes to be some wires going behind the Water Pump. Anyone know where it is at?

Ron: there aren't any bad first-time posts except the few that dump on somebody, and those are bad anytime. I suppose it's possible to drive an alternator from various places on the engine. Mine is driven from the fan belt, which is very common. Anything at the front of the engine that has wires going to it and has a pulley and fan belt is likely to be the alternator. Somebody who knows your tractor probably will comment if the alternator isn't driven off from the fan belt.

I can't say for sure because I am not really familiar with that series, but on a lot of small Japanese equipment the alternator is VERY small, just barely enough to make up for the starter's draw to start the motor. On some of these machines the alternator was combined on the same shaft as the water pump, this way there was only one pulley (and related bearing set) so as to limit the fan belt load on the engine. If you don't already have one, get a shop manual for your new machine, study it, it will make the whole experience somewhat less of a mystery. Best of luck & welcome.

Murf,
your correct the charging unit is on the fan shaft, I am yet to understand the water pump operation yet. I did order a full set of manuels today from a local dealer. Shop, parts, and operator manuels were just under $150.00. Many questions will be answered there I am confident. Thanks for your input.

Ron,
P.S. I believe it is a generator because it contains permanent magnets. With the belt off you can feel the effect of the magnets on it's rotation.

Ron, if yours is an older 80's model like my B6100 then the 'alternator' is in fact a magneto built into the fan. I think kubota calls it a dynamo. Its output is weak but enough to keep the battery charged. Also important for the older models like mine is knowing there is no water pump. Kubota and others used to use a 'thermo-siphon' cooling system. It works, but only if the utmost care is given to keeping the radiator and grille spotless clean. Easily done using compressed air, I check mine evertime before going out... amazing how easily they get plugged up!
