 Does a 4x4 need a weight box?

Just bought a Kubota B2700 4x4 with a power angle snow blade. I have a very steep 900 foot driveway. I was about to make a weight box for the tractor when I realized I had all the weight on the driving wheels already. The tractor weights about 1300 lbs. Would a weight box be useful? Tom, I assume you're talking about a B2710, which is what I have. And as with most small tractors, you'll run out of traction before you run out of power, so adding weight will improve traction. How much weight you need depends on your particular application. Instead of a weight box, I just use my box blade for ballast when needed, and I do have the rear tires filled with water and anti-freeze.

Tom
As the owner of a 800' steep driveway, I can give you 3 basic items that will either work or save your life.
1) ROPS
2) Tire Chains
3) Calcium in tires
Thats all you need to know

How do you put things in your rear tires?
How do you know what to put in and how much?
This is a used tractor so how do I know if there is or is not something already in the tires?
Thanks.

Well, today I plowed 5 inches of snow off the long steep driveway and now I understand why Stacy recommends chains and ROPS. I slid back down the slope a little but managed ok. Now I am looking for chains. Do I want them for front or back or both? Thanks to all of you for your help. Tom

FarmerWannabe, to tell whether your tires already have liquid ballast, stop it with a valve stem at the bottom, and press the valve core to let a little air out and see what comes out; air or liquid. I'd have a little pan (preferably clean plastic) to catch it in and would only let enough out to identify it. AS for putting it in, your manual should have some instructions. If you've never done it, you might be better off letting the dealer do it, but places like Tractor Supply Co. and lots of other farm equipment supply places sell an air/water valve to use with a garden hose to put the water in. And, of course, there are tools sold to put the calcium, anti-freeze, beet juice, or whatever in tires.

Oops, FarmerWannabe, I forgot, you asked how much to put in your tires; no more than 75% full of liquid. If you fill them with the valve stem at the top, when you get enough for it to run out there, you'll be at about the 75% level. Of course, if you don't need or want that much ballast, some folks only fill them 50%, so do it with the valve stem at the 3 o'clock or 9 o'clock position.
