 new tractor purchase

Hi,I've decided to buy my first tractor.I will buy a new 4wd,16-20hp,belly mower and tiller.Later on I'm planning on getting a front end loader.I've visited a couple of Deere,Massey,Kubota,New Holland and Kioti dealers.I'm leaning towards the Kubota B1700 but I really like the JD4100.Looking at the brochures both tractors seem very compatible on their capabilities but the 4100 it's more expensive.I would like to ask the board members if they could share some feedback on these models, compare them, and help me out on my decision making.I understand that tractor people are as loyal to their brands as a lot of car people,(believe me,I'm a Chevy man to the core),but I'm just trying to get information from the people who know other than a dealer.Thank you

They're both good tractors and you'd probably be happy with either one. Personally, I think the quality of the dealer is a bigger factor than the brand. I DON'T have any brand loyalty. I go for whatever I THINK is the best deal at the time (may be wrong, too, sometimes). Read through a bunch of the other messages on this board, see how many complaints you find about John Deere and how many you find about Kubota. I have a Kubota (B2710), used to have a B7100, and loved both of them.

From the research I've done, I've heard nothing but good about the JD4100, Kubota B-series, and the New Holland TC-18 or TC-21. I've looked them all over and decided I could be happy with any of these. Make sure when you look at brands and costs that you compare similar features. It's easy to think you're getting a smoking deal on one unit, only to find out that its lacking some nice features or does not overall compare to the other brand you're pricing. Myself, I have a JD4100 and do pretty much what you're talking about plus snow plowing. The 4100 does not have a problem with lawn scuffing like the larger 4000 series models apparently do. I'm very happy with mine, just wish I had another pocket full of money to buy more implements to play with (Oops, I mean work with). This unit is more than adequate size and power-wise for most any small acreage landowner. One note- if you plan to do much loader work-in this area I think that the JD 4000 series is ahead of the competition -check out the hydraulic pump flow capacity and you will see what I'm talking about.

I myself am currently in the same position as you. I have been looking for over a year now. I have two friends who have gone with the JD 4100 Hydro, and both are very happy. I have decided to go against the grain however. For the money, I have decided on the kubota B 2710. For the nearly the same price you get extra HP and just about everything else. The loader capacity is pretty close. I've found if loader work is a big issue, it's going to be hard to beat the JD 4000 series. If you're looking at the Kubota B 17, I heard of many people who are happy but decide to upgrade very soon after the purchase. If you can at all go bigger, I would really advise looking at the B2710.

First I'll like to thank B.Senter,Jim Youtz and MD for your helpfull comments.I visited another seven dealers on a 60 miles radius to get a better feel for the different styles and approaches from the sales people.I concluded that as far as the big picture goes I'm willing,if needed, to pay a little more for the tractor if I'm treated fair.I drove some 35 miles to find a Kubota dealer in Albemarle,NC,the business end of the building was very small but the service area appear to be ample, they had a very large lot and a good selection of models in both Kubota and NH.While I waited for the salesman a few people bought some parts,an older fellow was looking for one(1) plug wire, he's been everywhere but could not find just one wire, the man behind the counter told him that he only carried sets but called out for the mechanic who in turn went back in the shop and found a used but good wire, gave to the man and did not charge him a dime.I was impressed I thought people didn't do things like that any more. When I showed at the place I did not wear my Sunday best and did not shave that morning, the way I figured, with my accent(Puerto Rico),and not looking my best if the man treats me with respect and is straightforward with me I'll be willing to do business with him with no problem,by the way, don't blast me for my tactics I've been buying and selling old clunkers for a long time and some people will take a look and dismiss you because you don't fit their idea of the preferred customer. With that said I almost forgot to mention that they had a new B7500HSD with 54inch belly mower that cought my attention, they gave me a price wich I can live with,I'll probably buy it but there are two other dealers that treated me right also so I'll be going to them with that quote on that model to see if they can do better.Again thank you for your input,I'll keep you posted.
