2001 Kubota B21 Shifting Fork Replacement

I just purchased this tractor over the weekend. The owner said the shifting fork was bent not letting it engage into gear. I asked how this happens and he said from not making adjustments in the linkage and forcing it into gear. Is this true?. And if so, how hard is it to replace the shifting fork. This tractor has 1300 hours on it, runs very well and loader and backhoe operate very well. I only paid $2500.00 for everything so i thought it would be a good investment. I just ordered the parts manual and service manual for it today. Is this something i could tackle or should i send it to the dealership. Thanks in advance for any input. Smile

When you say "shifting fork" I assume you mean the lever that selects which range the transmission will be going into since I think all B21's were HST units.

If that is the case, it might not be anything more than jammed linkage, I don't recall the exact workings of them, it's been a long time, but my recollection is that the 'shifter' is a really basic mechanism that shifts between three mechanical gear reductions, like a gear transmission, but driven by a hydraulic pump.

I would try checking all the linkages first to be sure that someone hasn't just bent a lever so far that it doesn't function anymore.

If nothing appears out of place, then try working the little arm that goes through the case gently back & forth and see if it is just really stiff. They often get that way (as do PTO selctors) if not used much.

All in all, I would have to say I'd be very surprised if the shift fork in the trans. was the problem, there's a lot of much weaker mechanism to bend or break before you could exhert enough force on it to do any real damage.

Best of luck.

Talked to the previous owner again. He said the problem was in the Hi/Low lever. Said it pops out of gear when you move the tractor 3 or 4 feet. Being a HST he said they never used the clutch much. They mostly ran the tractor in low range. Says it won't go in gear or stay in gear at all. Any ideas! Thanks in advance!

Sounds more like either the selector is out of adjustment, not allowing it to be fully engaged.

I am confused though, you say that a) it won't go in gear, and b) it pops out of gear after moving 3 or 4 feet. Which is it? Or do you mean it is ok in low, but pops out of high range after moving a bit?

Either way, it doesn't sound like more than an adjustment.

Best of luck.

Sorry for the confusion. It was popping out gear when he would move the tractor 3 or 4 feet, then it finally got to the point where he could not even get it to go in gear at all. I have tried to make a couple of slight adjustments in the linkage, but it have not made any difference. Thanks!

Well I did it! Separated the tractor and pulled the HST out. The shifting fork was completely broke off laying in the bottom of the transmission case and there were 2 gears chewed beyond repair. Parts coming this week hope to have running by weekend. Thanks for all the input!
