 Kubota B1550 Hydrostatic Drive whine

Hi from Australia. I recently bought a B1550 HSD with 3000 hours on the clock. It often whines loudly and comes to a complete halt in forward gear. (Reverse is OK, which might be a good sign). Playing with the revs for a moment gets me going again. The problem occurs regardless of whether I'm in high or low range, 4WD or 2WD. Is there anything I can check or do on-site to improve the transmission performance, even marginally, before resorting to a long, long tow to a dealer. I have a dealer nearby, so I can get parts, tools etc but the tractor is on an isolated block 300 kms away. Also, is there a repair/service manual for this (or a similar model) with hydrostatic transmission. I'm pretty handy mechanically but I'm completely green when it comes to these transmissions. I have a parts catalogue with very detailed drawings but it doesn't provide any advice on how these things actually work. I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks, David O'Neil

It's hard to tell where this tractor is at with the problem but let's get started with a fresh change of fluid and filter. It sounds like that you are loosing your oil supply under pressure but only in forward? The supply is the same for both forward and reverse.

Sounds to me like it's extremely low on fluid. Perhaps when you are going forward oil is sloshing away from the suction line and cavitating. Then when you come to a stop and go backward, oil sloshes forward. If this goes on too long you'll ruin the pump and possibly the hydraulic motor---and that will be very expensive.

I had put a pint or two in, so the oil level was just above full on the dip stick. But perhaps I need to check again with the loader raised. I'll replace the oil and the filter next weekend but if that solves it I'll buy a dozen lottery tickets. I'm never that lucky. I've ordered an IT Kubota tractor manual too. Doesn't have exactly this model but it was cheap and might help. (Kubotas own workshop manual was about $240 Australian. Ouch!) David

Have you tried eBay for a manual? You might get lucky.

FYI: Service manuals are very expensive to write. I was a writer and illustrator for GM, Nissan, Toyota, etc. automotive manuals for convertible top modifications, and also worked up price quotes. A typical service manual supplement just for convertible portion was upward of $450,000. Yearly updates could be $70-150,000 depending on the car and the changes. Makes that $250 looks like petrol money now huh? Laughing out loud

The problem turned out to be a filthy, clogged wire mesh screen where the oil is sucked to the HST from the sump. Probably never cleaned because the backhoe subframe made removal of the screen difficult. I also cleaned the strainer that feeds the loader oil pump by blasting air back down the power steering tube. I couldnt remove that strainer because the loader subframe is in the way. But ultimately it was a nice cheap 'repair'. Its a completely different tractor now. Thanks for your help. David

I'd have to say I've not seen auto trans fluid used for a hydro before but someone probably has. I wouldn't use anything but Super UDT in them even with past belief that the Case IH Hytran was the best in the past but I've seen where it hasn't worked as good as the UDT when changing out.
