 L2850 Charging Problem

My L2850 will not appear to charge. Once I get it started it will run normal for hours, but if I shut it off it will not start with out jumping it. The dash meter is working but doesn’t light up like it is not getting a charge. When I put a meter at the battery terminals it only shows 11.54 volts with it running. Yet once it is running it runs and acts fine, however the battery never gets above the 11.5 volts. Could the charging system be working fine, but the battery will not take a charge. How else could I check the charging system or should I just replace the battery. I have had the tractor two years and have no information about its past history, i.e. battery age.

With the engine running you should be getting any where from 13.5 to 14.1 volts at the battery. Check the voltage at the back of the alternator to make sure you do not have blown fuse or fusible link. If no voltage I would suspect a bad alternator. But I would take it off and have it bench tested to be sure before buying a new one.

I am not sure how to check the voltage at the alternator. At what wire should I read the voltage.

 L2850 Charging Problem

You might want to start by cleaning the battery terminals and all the grounds. On a tractor of that vintage might have a simple electrical problem.

Check at the biggest red wire that is bolted to the back of the alternator. Usually around 10 gauge in size.

 L2850 Charging Problem

Thanks guys, tomorrow I will clean all the terminals and give it a charge and then check the voltage at the red wire. The tractor usually sits inside, but this summer do to some other projects it has been sitting outside and it has collected some hornets nest and possibly mice. I will let you know how I make out.

Thanks, again.
