I have an old L285 that I bought several years ago to serve as a mower with the addition of a 3-pt 72" finish mower. It's given me good service until this year. After sitting up all winter, it started readily. And the 3-point lift went up. And stayed up. And won't come down, no matter what I do to the controls. I have a fair amount of experience using tractors, but I've never before seen this type of behavior. Is it a Kubota thing? Help?

Not a Kubota thing at all. It does happen and you might just have a valve stuck open. Have yu changed the fluid often?>

Or has someone turned the valve under the seat and in so doing has locked the 3pth from coming down?

Best of luck.

I like Murf's theory. Check the drop valve and make sure it is turned full counter clockwise (open) and see if it still stays up. As Murf said it is right under the seat between your legs. I had an L245 that did that when I turned the drop valve in too far,

I'm counting on his experience that it isn't that, although I do hope it's that simple.

Thanks for the very prompt replies!

I just checked the lift lock thingy. It seems to have been full clockwise. It is very tight, I've never before touched it. With a pipe wrench, I turned it full counter clockwise and then back clockwise a bit. No movement on the lift; it has a heavy mower on it, full up. 300-600 lbs, I would guess. The mower was on the ground when I first started the tractor a few days ago and lifted full up as the engine cranked and then started. I fugured it would leak down after a while, but it's been full up for several days now.

I wonder what I can do to get the mower on the ground? Is there some place to bleed off the pressure?

Unlike the newer tractors were they are using a frame and compontents that are attached to the frame this is a built in system and it does require more information on the design to help you off the cuff so to speak. The older tractors used the castings as passages for the oil to componnents of the hydraulic system. It will take a good look at the service manual for the possible solution.
