 L4300 DT with a knock

Howdy

I have an 03 L4300 DT. It seems to have developed an engine knock. I believe it is fuel related, because it seems to go away when warm. I would also say that the tractor blows a bit more smoke than normal.

I am in Southern CA, on an avocado farm.....so cold for me is 30F.

The tractor has just under 200 hours on it. I have been running biodiesel in it....at a rate of about 50%.

I had neglected to wash the fuel filter until today.....I am not entirely sold on that piece.

Are there any better filters out for this application? Ive added CAT 2micron filters onto the vehicles, Ide like a way to add it onto the tractor.

I have been running this biodiesel in 3 diesel vehicles....at higher rates and I have had no trouble with them.

Anyway, I may try diesel purge to try to rid the tractor of the knock.......just out of curiosity, how much does an injector cost?

Thanks

GO back to original fuel and start mixing slower. You might only get 25% mix with a good burn.

Well, Ive since switched back to mostly diesel, and ran at least 5 hours with a PTO chipper attached. It seems to have cured itself.

I wonder what caused it.....I will, however, be going back to biodiesel.

You had to high of a pecentage, that simple. Different design engines run better on it then others. Some engines not all actually develop a knock when injectors go bad as they can't burn it in the way to get a good explosion from the spray pattern. This is much the same problem you had.

Well, the tractor had pry 20 hours on the same biodiesel blend before the knock appeared, so my guess is that the injectors just got a bit dirty.

Who knows, it may have gone away just by running the thing at PTO speed for a few hours on biodiesel anyway......

Most of my tractor work is not at a constant RPM. That may tend to cause injector coking.
